My husband came to the Cape for the weekend so I brought him along on a painting expedition. We went to the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center in Sandwich, just over the bridge. Found a great place to set up - a picnic shelter! shade! and a bathroom nearby. Life is good sometimes. The walkway in front of us along the canal was quite alive with people of all types walking by on their way to the beach to the right here, or just strolling. Quite a few had fishing gear. These three were set up near me and although they weren't quite that close together, that's what we call artistic license! It was fun to paint -I got most of the figures and all of the landscape right on site and only needed a few touch ups later. The figures did make it a longer painting to do - there is no way around that complexity.

This was a fun day! We went to visit the Chatham Fish Pier on cape Cod, where fishing boats bring their catch in. It's a big operation and they have provided a viewing platform right on top of  the area where the boats come in. You look down rignt into the boats and watch as the fish are put in a big hopper and raised up to be put into massive barrels. It is QUITE a show! Part of the fun is that, where there are fishing boats, there are seals. They love getting the guts and other delicacies that the fishermen throw overboard. Well this little guy had obviously had a good meal before he glided away from the dock on his back, smile on his face. I took several photos of him, and this was the winner that got made into a painting.

Where there are seals, there are sharks, but that's another story. Just be sure to check conditions before you go swimming near Chatham!

Wellfleet is just far enough along Cape Cod to make you think you went a long, long way. It's not as far as Truro or Provincetown, but almost. The crowds thin out and the pace slows. Entering the town, there seems to be just enough shops and places to eat. And in the center of it all is a long long town dock. On this day I had been looking for someplace to paint in the shade. I looked and looked but it just didn't happen. So I rigged up a regular umblella and managed to get out of the sun for a little bit. But it really was hot and bright and I persisted. This little sailboat was sitting in the marsh looking like it was waiting for its owners to come back from the city for a relaxing weekend. In this case, I decided it was worth sitting there in the sun, because it made such a nice pattern on the hull of the boat.

What a wonderful discovery, finding Manchester-By-The-Sea harbor not far from my home on the North Shore of Boston. I visited with a friend whose pastel class came frequently to work. Just lovely - still a working harbor where you would not expect to find one. I liked the sunlight on this small working boat and the reflections.

My time on the island of Islesford was very special - it was a weekend class with Henry Isaacs and Ashley Bryan. It just didn't matter that it was raining almost the whole time, we were all so happy to be there. Heaven at an island in the sea….  I had found a place to paint on an enclosed porch that looked out to the next dock, which housed the lobster COOP that served both Cranberry Islands. I was taken by the abstract quality of what I was seeing - the yellow metal structure, a weigh station, I think - tell me if I am wrong!, a ladder down to the water, wonderful pieces of wood and a spot that had a really bright orange spot in a bit of unexpected sunlight. Yum, yum, I like this piece.

This 50 day project has been a lot of fun because I do things I would not normally do. Which, brings up complicated questions, such as "why not"?  Normally I don't use much orange, or do abstracts, or have so much fun when I am painting. Hmmmm.

I am experimenting with palette knife. This piece is about 90% done using that technique. If you've never watched the sunset at Menemsha in Martha's Vinyard, put it on your list. The sky is so big here, I don't know how I got it int an 8x10. Not to worry, I've got a bigger one in the works.

I loved the little town of Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard. I know I'm not alone in this. And there I was painting and there were other artists there, too. One had taught me a lesson earlier in my trip. I had wanted to paint a certain area, but it was so windy, I was sure the easel would blow away! Later I went back and an artist was painting in the exact same spot I would have chosen. But he used his vehicle to block the wind and had been there 3 hours. A lesson to remember. Where there's a will there's a way!

This was one of those paintings that seemed easy but was a challenge. I wanted to get that last light that hits the rocks and turns them almost orange, and then also softens the sky and turns greens into burnt sienna. And I had about 15 minutes to get it. I didn't get it then, but later in the studio, I could. I'm happy with it now. This piece was done from my balcony in Stonington and is of the Deer Isle Thorofare. I think the frame (one of my favorites from Documounts) sets it off nicely.

I was in the Deer Isle "downtown", about a block of small gift shops, food and galleries, looking for a place to paint. Just past the bridge, I saw a small park I'd never seen before, with lovely gardens, a nice bench, shade, and a beautiful view. Counting myself lucky, I set up and spent quite a bit of time on this one, and also worked it a bit in the studio afterward, adding glazes to bring out the canoe contrast, and softening the background. What a nice day! It would certainly be a great place for a paddle!

This is the long range view from my deck in Stonington. All kinds of boats, brom lobster boats to schooners were constantly going up and down the area. Almost too special to paint.

The sunsets are lovely on this side of Deer Isle, which faces west just north-west of Stonington. This piece was painted at Burnt Cove, again with my steering wheel easel. There is a gift shop just past where I parked, and all I saw was a long old interesting looking building. After I had been there a while, a woman came over and told me I could go down to the beach if I wanted - and then she said oh,you are painting. Then she said she needed to get back to work. So after I was finished, I went around the bend a bit and found her with her mother on a picnic table creating some crafts. The gift shop, called Clam Factory Gifts, was in an old building that seemed to go on forever. I stayed quite a while and had a personal tour through it. The most impressive were the dollhouses the woman made, but there was also a large variety of other gifts in the jumble in the back including photography and paintings/drawings. It was a real "downeast experience"!  And just a short way up 15A north, you will actually come to a town called "Sunset".

This is another piece from my steering wheel easel. I love that light when the sun is so low that the water just shimmers while the sky softens. Silouettes become stronger and details fade and we are all taken in by the magic. The location of this piece is a wonderful cove near Stonington and "The Cannery" gift shop which is unseen off to the left.

Now that I have my "Steering Wheel Easel" that hooks over the wheel, I tried it out in Maine. The first day of my trip, I did three paintings in the car using the easel. I have to be honest with you. There is a limit. When I was painting this piece, it started raining, hard, and I discovered the limit on the use of the easel. You cannot paint out the window if you cannot SEE out of the window. But I did the best I could and when I got this piece home I took a good look and said "no one is going to want that, it is just too grey and boring" So I worked on it in the studio and that's how it got it's name. I think it actually looks like it could be a wet, after the rain scene! This scene is on the causeway that runs from Little Deer Isle to Deer Isle.

When I was in Rockland I was very taken with a pretty town park by the edge of the sea and took pictures there three times. I watched these beautiful poppies open and expand and start to flop a bit during the time I was there. There was also a small gazebo. While I was there, I met a woman, an artist also, who arrived on a bike, and who maintained the garden. When I asked, she said she was not part of a garden club, but she just did it because she wanted to, including putting plants in and maintenance. This painting was not working until I put her in and later I realized why and the connection to Mom. Mom was above all, committed to people around her. In each of her areas of connection, she had many friends and she was always contributing to some aspect of making her community better. Not only is there a community of 25 poppies in this piece, everyone different, but when I put the gardener in, the piece came together. Its not about the poppies, its about community and contributing to make a more beautiful world, another surprise. My art always knows where I am going and it always gets there first.

This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

When My friend and I went to Cape Cod to paint, we both found it very difficult to get started. It was too sunny and hot; I couldn’t set up the easel with the umbrella because the wind would blow it away. I set up the chair and then realized that the tide was coming in too fast to do the painting that way. Then I moved the chair and tried again, but the rocks kept getting covered with too much water. And my feet hurt, and I felt all discombobulated. So I did the best I could and when we quit, was delighted to find a lunch place with air conditioning. Later in the studio, I reworked the painting and combined three different images. What made it work was more rocks, bigger rocks, and water coming right under the chair.

Each time I start a painting series, I have incredible barriers to overcome. This trip was no exception. There’s that lesson from Mom again – where there’s a will there’s a way……..and my own translations: just keep on keeping on, and put one foot in front of the other…….eventually you will make it. Thanks Mom, again, for this lesson.
