I felt that we needed something spring like and decided on this little bird perched on a metal jug with some buttercups. So you know it wasn't done in February! I am very happy with this little (8x8) piece. I like the light on the bird, and the fresh buttercups bouncing against the blue wall leaving cool shadows. It was challenging to get the dull bronze container correct with some highlights but not too many. It's just a happy piece!

My time on the island of Islesford was very special - it was a weekend class with Henry Isaacs and Ashley Bryan. It just didn't matter that it was raining almost the whole time, we were all so happy to be there. Heaven at an island in the sea….  I had found a place to paint on an enclosed porch that looked out to the next dock, which housed the lobster COOP that served both Cranberry Islands. I was taken by the abstract quality of what I was seeing - the yellow metal structure, a weigh station, I think - tell me if I am wrong!, a ladder down to the water, wonderful pieces of wood and a spot that had a really bright orange spot in a bit of unexpected sunlight. Yum, yum, I like this piece.

I still hated that still life so I did this painting by taking shapes and colors from it but puting them down anywhere I pleased. Now I like the lively action in it.

This was one of those paintings that seemed easy but was a challenge. I wanted to get that last light that hits the rocks and turns them almost orange, and then also softens the sky and turns greens into burnt sienna. And I had about 15 minutes to get it. I didn't get it then, but later in the studio, I could. I'm happy with it now. This piece was done from my balcony in Stonington and is of the Deer Isle Thorofare. I think the frame (one of my favorites from Documounts) sets it off nicely.

This time is perfect for this painting! Tomorrow, my friend Barb Harrold and I are traveling to Cushing, Maine (near Rockland, ME) for "Art in the Barn" a two person show in this lovely barn pictured in the painting. It is on the grounds of the Cushing Historical Society. Cushing is where the whole pink chair project started, just last year, in June, when I stayed there to paint. We will have a reception on Friday, and be open all day Saturday and Sunday. I will be showing my whole pink chair suite, along with all of the new paintings that I did this June in Maine. Barb will be showing her soft sculpture creatures, puppets, and hats, and she will have her sewing machine set up so she can demonstrate her techniques. I put 6000 steps on my pedometer just packing my car.

This was part of my view off the deck on the place where I stayed in Stonington. Fabulous. The waterway is called the Deer Isle Thoroughfare and it is just studded with island after island and a gazillion lobster boats. It was heaven being there! I loved the way the little yellow house kept watch.

AI had only one day to unpack from my mother's funeral and repack for my planned trip to Maine to paint. Along with my clothes and art supplies, I took a heavy heart to a beautiful cove in Cushing, Maine. Solitude is good for both grieving and for making art. After getting settled and getting acquainted with the area and places I wanted to paint, I started painting. I was in for some surprises. After painting away from the cottage, I decided to paint off of the back deck. But first, I enjoyed the view for a while, sitting in the pink Adirondack chair in the back yard. It matched the shutters of the house. As I rested, I thought of how much Mom would have loved that chair. It was her color, an intense knock-your-socks-off pink. Not thinking much more about it I painted it into the small piece “Incoming Tide” The chair looked good there, adding a touch of color. Little did I realize that the title I gave it was foreshadowing what was about to happen.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This show is currently traveling and will be available for purchase after the travel is completed, around mid-2014. This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

This is one of the smaller studio paintings. With these, I started smaller and then gradually built up my size until I was at the 3x3 foot largest piece. There is a bit of shine on the canvas in this pic and I will be getting another, better, photo soon. Though it is small, I think it somehow manages to hold the large sky, don't you think?

I thought it would be nice to show something besides flowers. This piece is the first one from my "Coastal Sunrise" series which I showed in May at the Marblehead Art Association It is a small studio painting created after a wonderful painting week at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. All in this series are framed.

I still can't see the title of this piece without smiling, because it was the title of the song sung by the school department all-city chorus in Waltham, MA during my first year there as an arts administrator. Oh, the whole stage full of kids singing just took my breath away.
