Daisies, Veronica, and Coreopsis

6x6 oil on panel

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $75

This was the first time I did a bouquet cluster with the purpose of getting the light on it. All the flowers are from my garden. It is amazing just how many you can cram into a 6x6 panel!

"Lenten Rose (Hellebore)"

6x6 oil on panel

framed with an exhibition quality
light wood contemporary float frame

opening bid: $75
Buy it now $175
After the auction price:$250

For two years now I have purchased a gorgeous white Hellebore plant and proceded to almost kill it. Last year I DID kill it. This one is struggling but it is still making it. Hopefully, it will last long enough for me to get it into the ground. (Considering there is about 3 feet of snow out there, it may be a while!) Anyhow, it has now been immortalized in paint. I shared it earlier and lots of my readers liked it. Now, it is your chance to get this sweet piece at a good price, on auction! Bid away!

Shack Window, Friendship, ME (Framed)

8x10
Oil on Panel
still wet
Framed with contemporary float frame, light wood
Limited time only
sold

You walk down the rickety pier covered with traps and surrounded by boats and rough beauty. In the window you stop, taken by the wonderful collage of bits and pieces of the fisherman's world: peeling paint, a buoy unique to the family; weathered wood, used, useful, and trashy stuff; you can feel cold water, salt air, hope of a good catch, memories, despair, swelling seas, and hard work. Suddenly this is more beautiful than the sky and sea.

Blue and White Boat

Oil on Prepared Paper
7.5 x11 plus mat and frame

$390

Archival mat and contemporary natural frame

This piece is a great memory one for me and it is getting reframed and is on its way to the gallery, unless someone buys it first!  I was taking a summer painting class at U Mass Dartmouth and we were supposed to stay on campus to paint, which was primarily a solo undertaking. We would go out, do our thing, then return to the studio for an extensive critique. One day I escaped and discovered a wonderful out of the way boat yard. It was full of old boats and weeds, gravel roads and had a wonderful view of the ocean. I came back day after day, doing painting after painting. This was one of my favorites and is the first image I ever used on a business card. The little blue and white boat sits waiting patiently for its owner.

Much later, I went to revisit "my" boatyard. It was totally cemented over with all the boats parked in neat rows and unwelcoming signs. I was so lucky to discover it when I did!

Woman With Cello #1

6x6
oil on panel

I had an opportunity today to paint a chamber music ensemble, Music at Eden's Edge  at the North Shore Art Association in a "really open rehearsal" open for listening and for artists to paint and draw.

It was an absolute delight and I did two paint sketches. I haven't had time to determine if they are finished so I will not price them at this time, but I wanted to share them. Now, it is a challenge to paint figures, and I haven't done it for some time, and it is even more of a challenge when they are moving, and playing their instruments! I was particularly taken with the cello player in her white dress. I kept remembering a May Sartom poem:

"Girl With Cello" by May Sarton

There had been no such music here until
A girl came in from falling dark and snow
To bring into this house her glowing cello
As if some silent, magic animal.

She sat, head bent, her long hair all a-spill
Over the breathing wood, and drew the bow.
There had been no such music here until
A girl came in from falling dark and snow.

And she drew out that sound so like a wail,
A rich dark suffering joy, as if to show
All that a wrist holds and fingers know
When they caress a magic animal.
There had been no such music here until
A girl came in from falling dark and snow.

"I Told You That They're Not Mine

6x6 oil on panel

Sold

It was hard to set up the composition of this piece but deciding to use the 5x7 rather than the 6x6 worked for it. I like that the little bird is denying parental ownership of the limes.

Blue and White

Blue and White
12x16
$300
Acrylic on paper

In my 50 day project, I have been alternating between realistic and abstract paintings. This piece is an attempt to bring the two together; the defined subject matter along with the range of brushes, palette knife and freer techniques. I like the bold contrasts and the complimentary color scheme. I think we've got "essence of iris" and "essence of tulip leaves"  for example, even though you may not see all clearly. It's challenging to step back from spelling it all out.

I am participating in the Hurricane Sandy fundraiser through Daily Paintworks. Artists donate a painting for auction and all profits go to Hurricane relief. I am currently looking for the best place to send funds and am open to suggestions.
The piece I am entering is now on auction. The minimum bid of $150 is far below the regular price of $470 so you are likely to get a good deal! The location pictured is at Colton Pond in Vermont, along rte.100 just past the intersection of rte. 4 and rte.100. A nice quiet and beautiful place to stop for a picnic! Long range views of the mountains and a very private setting. I was the only car there the day I painted this. It is a good sized piece at 12"x25"

Holly with Four Leaves

This is one of a series of holly and poinsettias images from my "A Year in Bloom" series that I have used for years to make holiday cards from. I am finally willing to let them go. I think that will help me to make new ones next year! A purchaser will receive a few of the cards from the series as a gift.

"Sad Snowman" Auction to benefit Newtown families

"Sad Snowman"
6x6
Oil on Panel
Auction benefit starting bid $75
to bid click here

This sweetheart misses his owner.
Torn by the horrific events in Newtown, Connecticut, I didn't know what to do or how to respond. I decided to think of the view of the toys, whose owners will never come home again. This is the first one I painted. For this one, I will donate all of the funds raised to an appropriate source to help the bereaved families of the beloved children who were lost.

I still hated that still life so I did this painting by taking shapes and colors from it but puting them down anywhere I pleased. Now I like the lively action in it.

"Three Daisies at Joe's Pond" (matted)

Three Daisies at Joe's Pond
7.5x5
Watercolor
Archivally matted
$115

When I was taking a summer education class at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, I took a break one summer day and followed my nose to Joe's Pond, where I sat in the grass, enjoyed the sun and did this watercolor. Was the watercolor just an excuse for sitting by the pond that day? Maybe. Sort of like fishing. I always thought that catching the fish was second to actually being out there and having a reason to do so. Joe's Pond is in northern Vermont, and I always like to think of it as the pond where they put a figure in a chair on the ice and take bets as to when the ice will break up and the pond will gobble him up. No ice that day I was there, though.

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 card sets (sets of 5 different blank cards) available on Etsy.

"Two Open Godetias" (matted)

Two Open Godetias
7.5x5
Oil on prepared paper
matted archivally
$140

I think godetias are beautiful flowers. Not quite a rose, not quite a lily but with the softness of the rose and the structure of the lily, and a delicacy that I love. I enjoyed doing these two with the various shades of white.
