White Poinsettia

This is one of a series of holly and poinsettias images from my "A Year in Bloom" series that I have used for years to make holiday cards from. I am finally willing to let them go. Colton Pond, oil, 12x24 Auction $150 minimum bid
Something new has been added! I am participating in the Hurricane Sandy fundraiser through Daily Paintworks. Artists donate a painting for auction and all profits go to Hurricane relief. I am currently looking for the best place to send funds and am open to suggestions.
The piece I am entering is now on auction. The minimum bid of $150 is far below the regular price of $470 so you are likely to get a good deal! The location pictured is at Colton Pond in Vermont, along rte.100 just past the intersection of rte. 4 and rte.100. A nice quiet and beautiful place to stop for a picnic! Long range views of the mountains and a very private setting. I was the only car there the day I painted this. It is a good sized piece at 12"x25" Here's the auction link http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/96551

"Afire"
12x16
Oil on Arches Oil Paper

This started as an abstract to music. I knew I wanted the golden center, but was surprised at how it progressed. As the painting developed darker edges, I started to sense of something burning so I went with that. I love the linear quality against the background colors, and the hot center against the cooler edges.

Perch

The bird is one of the several I keep for models; my young students love them and perch them on lots of different things to draw or paint them. I decided to join them this day, and perched the (who knows what kind of) bird on an antique metal mug (bronze, I think) that I found at a flea market. I did love the way his feathers got quite pink with a few spots of red to accent the basic peach-y color.

This sweetheart misses his owner.
Torn by the horrific events in Newtown, Connecticut, I didn't know what to do or how to respond. I decided to think of the view of the toys, whose owners will never come home again. This is the first one I painted. For this one, I will donate all of the funds raised to an appropriate source to help the bereaved families of the beloved children who were lost.

"Lotus Pod and Milkweed""

"Lotus Pod and Milkweed"
12x16
Acrylic on paper
$150

This piece is a favorite. I worked from a dry lotus pod and milkweed pod, drawing them freely in the paint over and over, overlapping. Then I applied paint by large and small brush, dry brush, and palette knife, absolutely enjoying the process. Some sections disappeared and some remained. I love the colors bouncing off of each other. I like how the acrylic allows heavy application of paint and many layers in quick succession. One of the segments of the lotus pod had just one seed in it and it felt special to me, so I gave it a great spot in the composition.

The first of the larger, more complicated abstracts. Completed the day the doctor told me he recommends surgery with a positive outcome highly likely for my cronic pain from spinal stenosis. A small color study done form the amazing photo on the cover of her book. As with the other artists I admired, I copied her colors and proportions but not her subject matter. The mixes of colors that take her away from "crayola" type ones and just amazing. I learn every time I look at her work.

50 days - #14 color study

50 days #14 color study
5x7
oil on Arches oil paper
$50

Ok, it is time to start showing you some of the things I am doing with my 50 days project. One of the things I am really enjoying and learning from at the same time is my color studies. They fit in nicely when there is just a small window of time to paint. I take a repro of a painting by an artist whose work I admire, and copy the colors. I also copy the relative size/proportion in the picture, but do NOT copy the representational image. I find this allows me to figure out what they are doing that I like so much, without being sidetracked by trying to do the same image. My goal is to somehow assimilate all this understanding so that when I am ready to move ahead in January, I will have more understanding under my belt. This piece honors Richard Schmid, a fabulous realistic artist, who wrote the book "Alla Prima". I thought his color was mostly neutral, but what a masterly way he works in delightful touches of color that bring the piece alive, like the pink and turquoise blue in this piece.

Song Garden Sunflowers (Framed)

Song Garden Sunflowers

oil on canvas

My last painting at the Song Garden in Cornish New Hampshire was this one of sunflowers reaching up for the mountains behind the autumn hills. I love the milkweed on the green hill lit up like yellow lanterns in the sunshine. Rain stopped me when I had it blocked out, but I was able to finish it in the studio.

I was painting in the yard of a friend in Vermont, and really liked the flying heron weathervane that had been inserted into a rock as a sculpture. As I painted it, I noticed a birdhouse and fit it into the painting. What I really like about this piece are the trees all across the top and the "conversation" between the two objects..

I loved the little town of Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard. I know I'm not alone in this. And there I was painting and there were other artists there, too. One had taught me a lesson earlier in my trip. I had wanted to paint a certain area, but it was so windy, I was sure the easel would blow away! Later I went back and an artist was painting in the exact same spot I would have chosen. But he used his vehicle to block the wind and had been there 3 hours. A lesson to remember. Where there's a will there's a way!

Driving along the road in Vermont in October, it's all about the leaves...the mountains...the fresh air. This scene is right out in front of the home of some ex-students of mine who had invited me to dinner while I was nearby on an autumn painting trip. I said I'd come if I could paint first! So I did. Great meal, too....

At Gay Head Lighthouse in Martha's Vineyard the view is just amazing. An area with shops and snack bars has been built near the esteemed view, and bus after bus come by to see the lighthouse above the spectacular clay cliffs. But across from it is a view just as amazing near the Native American Museum, and I set up there to paint, showing the huge sky and the crashing surf far below. I had very few people come by though I was out in the open. Amazing what moving a bit beyond will get you in beauty.

Up the hill is a Tea Room in a cottage once used as an artist studio, again, help yourself and leave a donation. A lovely place and I had it almost all to myself for two days.

Currently I am doing a special project, 50 days - a new painting each day no matter how large, no going back until after 50 days, which will be new years. If you would like to see the pieces as they are created, please "like" my facebook page - Lynne Schulte/studio27art

(New Project) "50 Days #1 "Garden Gate"

50 Days #1 - "Garden Gate"
20x20
oil on canvas

Hi, everyone! I have been working on advancing in my art - but I don't know where that might lead yet. I am doing one painting a day - have to start a new one each day, and most are quite large, like this one. I am focusing on working larger and looser, without thought of sales of exhibits (that part is hard). This painting is from day one of the series. It is a wonderful garden gate on Martha's Vineyard.

I will not be offering the paintings in the series for sale until January, when I take a fresh look at everything, to be sure that it is the way I want it.. SO....I am not going to daily post the paintings here, because I want only available works seen on the first page.

I am posting the project on facebook and I will talk about the 50 days on this blog. Please like my facebook page or subscribe to my blog to get the updates in your mailbox!         facebook: Lynne Schulte/studio27art

Fading Godetia

Godetias are so lovely that they are even beautiful when they are fading away. I think the dark blue background perked them up.

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. "Three Daisies at Joe's Pond" (matted)

Three Daisies at Joe's Pond
7.5x5
Watercolor
Archivally matted
$115

When I was taking a summer education class at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, I took a break one summer day and followed my nose to Joe's Pond, where I sat in the grass, enjoyed the sun and did this watercolor. Was the watercolor just an excuse for sitting by the pond that day? Maybe. Sort of like fishing. I always thought that catching the fish was second to actually being out there and having a reason to do so. Joe's Pond is in northern Vermont, and I always like to think of it as the pond where they put a figure in a chair on the ice and take bets as to when the ice will break up and the pond will gobble him up. No ice that day I was there, though.
