"Boats in the Harbor"

These little pleasure boats are sitting in Rockport Harbor, MA. They are wondering why their owner hasn't come to take them out on such a lovely day, and I am too. Low starting bid, already framed, a great deal!

Vermont Treeline, Early Autumn

4x6
Watercolor
$140

This tiny piece was done sitting in the car....on a crisp autumn day in Woodstock, Vermont that was too windy to go outside. It's another small gem I found in my treasure hunt, and I have always loved the simplicity of it. I particularly like the way the evergreens stand out. I always enjoy that part of fall, seeing them return after being hidden by all the deciduous trees. They are like the bones of the landscape. Now it's your chance to own it!

Spine of the Forest

Spine of the Forest
7x5
Watercolor and Prismacolor

$140

This is a second piece discovered lurking in my drawer that I decided I like. It was done from the forest floor found at Haystack Mountain School Of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. The amazing boreal forest there is rich in lichens, mosses, roots, balsams, ferns, and  tiny sea urchins dropped by the gulls. It is a most wonderful collage. I love walking there and especially love the roots that ladder the surface in wonderful twisting ways and they spread over the massive rocks and ledges.

"Rainbow"

 "Rainbow"
about 5x7
watercolor on watercolor paper

$50

OK, Now I am going to have some fun here. Because I am working on large work for an upcoming show, I have not done small paintings in a while. Recently I cleaned my studio and made some cool discoveries of great little work that I have never posted. I am putting these up for auction at low starting prices so that they can find a good home! So much better than sitting in a drawer!

This one's title came easily. I think I did it while experimenting with new watercolors.

Open Rose (Matted)

7.5x5 oil on prepared paper, archivally matted

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $85

An update for my readers:
I am restarting my Daily Paintworks blog. After a recent workshop with Carol Marine, I have returned all refreshed and inspired! I will be posting some pieces that I have posted before, but these will be now available at auction for a great price! Some will be new works inspired by the workshop, and oil sketches done on location as I work plein aire on pieces that will become larger works in the studio. The works primarily posted here will be my smaller work. Larger work will now be available through my brand-new gallery. (No website yet at larkrisinggallery.com, but watch for it and e-mail me if there is a painting you were looking for.) The new gallery is called Lark Rising, and like that bird, will lift your spirits! It is in Rockport, MA, on Bearskin Neck in the Bearskin Neck Motor Lodge lobby.

I had a lovely bunch of roses and was experimenting with how to make them freshly and quickly. This is one that I love: It just worked and doing anythig else would have not made it better.

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 card sets (sets of 5 different blank cards) available on Etsy.

"Yellow Freesias" (Matted)

Yellow Freesias
5x7.5
watercolor
Matted archivally
$115

Next to Lilies, I love to paint freesia. They seem just like just like little lillies, plus the added attraction of their great arching stem with a gracious curve. And they last a long time; one opening, then the next. I love this piece, with the bright yellow against the black and purple background.

Keny's Rhododendrons (matted)

Keny's Rhododendrons
Archivally matted
Watercolor
7x5 1/2
$115

Today I spent the afternoon taking pictures of pieces that I have done but hadn't managed to record. Consequently, we are back in "A Year in Bloom", the painting series from the year I did 365 paintings of flowers. These were the first pieces I posted on Daily Paintworks. Many of these have been sold, but there are still a good number of nice pieces available. This is one of them, a watercolor I did at my son's house when I was visiting. All of the matted florals have a 3" archival mat which sets them off as little treasures. They mat out to 12x14.

Remembrance -The Pink Chair Project #5 - "Lupines and Buttercups"

TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2012

Lupines and Buttercups

Watercolor and Gouache
$375
Delayed Sale
This Painting is Available, see below

I was perplexed about this piece for a long time. I didn’t know whether or not to put it in the show because it didn’t have a pink chair in it. But I absolutely love it. For me it says all that I went to Maine for and it felt like part of the series. I had to leave the spot where I was painting the first day because of a storm before it was finished and came back to finish a couple of  days later, on the day before I had the awakening that I was going to be doing Pink Chair paintings. As I painted that day I had an incredible feeling of intensity when I was painting, like I had to do it fast - strong - NOW!  It is part of what put the power in that tree. I think that the strength I felt had come from Mom and was just waiting inside to be named on the next day when I would be doing the first transformative painting, the one in which I felt her presence.. With tears in my eyes, on the last day of preparing paintings for this show, I realized that she was indeed there, but quiet and in the background. Her power had come through my paintbrush. So I painted her in, as she deserved.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This show is currently traveling and will be available for purchase after the travel is completed, around mid-2014. Art work may be held until then with a 10% down payment. E-mail me or see my pink chair project blog, for details

This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

I took one of my beloved trips to York, Maine. Besides the required trip to Stonewall Kitchens for tastes of all their goodies and lunch, I like to go to the John Hancock Wharf. It is a beautiful spot on the York River. It has a nice pier and it also shares the location with a great gallery, the George Marshall Store Gallery.

This is a great little gallery that has contemporary and traditional art. I'd like them to represent me some day. It was the store that sold the stuff that John Hancock's Wharf unloaded. Eventually it became a central trading spot for all kinds of merchandise. So the spot has history, and art, and lots of beauty.

It was a gorgeous day and I did not have the pink chair with me but I decided I would paint anyway, because conditions were so perfect. I set up my paints and easel on the wharf (found shade and a great view) and started laying out my composition and getting in a few base colors on a small piece of paper. I suddenly did a double take. There, in the upper left of what was going to be my composition, was a pink Adirondack chair just like mine, with other colors. It was in the perfect spot for my composition. I literally had not seen any of the chairs when I set up. Did you put it there, Mom? I swear I hadn't seen it at all. As my sister Georgie said, Cool…..what I thought of is that the chairs with "Mom" were her friends visiting.  She would so much more enjoy a beautiful day with others than alone, right?  Well, I gladly painted them in.

Remembrance -The Pink Chair Project #3 - "Camden View"

After doing the two pink chair paintings at the cabin, I realized that I was looking at my new series. The bottom line was that I just didn't want to do anything else and I felt that this process would help me in my grieving. I had sat for a long time with Mom's book, reading again all she wrote about her life. What a gift that was! But now I was ready to move ahead in public and I had a whole day ahead of me. I decided that because it was a rare good weather day, to go up the auto road at Mount Battie in Camden.

It really caught some eyes as I put the pink chair out on the edge. Tourists enjoying the view were saying "Boy, you really want to be comfortable up here". But as I spread out my paints and sat a distance away, my purpose became clear. Throughout the afternoon, people stopped and talked. I used a combination of transparent watercolor under opaque gouache, a new thing for me this summer, which I like better than transparent watercolor alone. I told the story of my mother and the chair over and over, and gave out the business cards that seemed to please people. Telling it over and over seemed to help me. The afternoon wore on and the crowd thinned. I slowed down as I got near the end, very reluctant to go. But finally, with the sun setting and the chill coming in, I finally picked up my paints and headed home. I really love this piece. I am transported back there instantly when I look at it.

Done plein aire on a spectacular day for skies, this painting and Blue Skies #2 are great together. The sky was so big the horizon had to be VERY low, and I like it that way; it helps to tell the story.

Matted "Sunlit Winter Day"

Sunlit Winter Day
10x14
Watercolor
$190

Some winter days are so beautiful, especially when you have been cooped up in the house for a while. And, sometimes, when you get to walk down the long boardwalk to the beach at Plum Island in the Parker River Wildlife Preserve, you see combinations of sunlight trees, sand dunes and grasses that are just lovely. This was one of those days. This lovely place is near Newburyport, MA, another favorite spot, and I am 25 minutes from each of them. Very lucky!

Matted "Off the Haystack Deck"

Off the Haystack Deck
7x10
archivally matted
watercolor
$125

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, is a special place, almost sacred to me. It is the place where I go to get deeper into everything I am thinking of, and to move ahead in my art. I haven't been recently, but have been there 8 times, each meaningful in a different way. It's a community of 70-80 artists living and working and playing together. It sits in a balsam boreal forest with rocky boulders and many lichens and mosses and magic spots. Most of all, it tumbles down the hill to the sea, with wide steps good for sitting, and if you step off the stairs you find places to work and places to dream, to wonder, and to relax. I am remembering when we all took our blankets one night in August and stayed into the night watching the meteor showers until I left at 3. Some stayed all night. And the art! It is the best fine crafts in the world, and each session they have one paper studio that offers things like printmaking, drawing, bookmaking, and papermaking. That's where I usually land. This small painting is done from the deck right outside my cabin. All this beauty under your nose!
