This gentle colored painting is a plein aire piece(painted on site) direct from one of the famous crane sculptures in the Sedgwick Gardens at Long Hill in Beverly, MA. A beautiful spot and open to the public, I find it a necessary place to unwind and create art. Each season brings a new beauty. I came across this and thought you might like to see it. It was done in Texas Falls State Park in Vermont, sitting on a picnic table and not knowing yet that I had been bitten by those tiny bugs, I think black flies, under my hairline while I had been sitting over by the falls. Glad I didn't know it then! It was such a peaceful beautiful day.

It was the last painting day of my Henry Isaacs/Ashley Bryan workshop on Islesford and the first sun we had seen, so we were quite joyful. After painting a couple of small pieces looking out at the harbor, I turned and saw this sunlight shining through the trees and hitting the little one in the back. It was fun to paint!

The sun had finally come out on Islesford Maine, and we had one more day to paint in our Henry Isaac/Ashley Bryan Labor Day Weekend workshop. (What a joy THAT was) But seeing the sun after nothing but fog and rain brought our some colors in me I didn't know I had, and it brought out a looseness I can't usually get even if I try. It was another play day when I did this. Abstracts always feel like play. I seem to grab curves and intersect lines with them in an opposing way, and then throw on lots of color. Here it looked a little tight and I finished with big splashes of palette knife in bright color. It looks to me like a lima bean hiding in the middle of the party. He was very important right from the beginning but I don't know why!

This is still wet! It is one of the beautiful classic dozen roses that my husband gave me for Valentines Day. Challenging to paint, but I am so happy that it came out so well! My friend tells me that now I have to paint 11 more…..I don't know , my paints are at the studio and there is a  blizzard between me and them…we will see.

For two years now I have purchased a gorgeous white Hellebore plant and proceded to almost kill it. Last year I DID kill it. This one is struggling but it is still making it. Hopefully, it will last long enough for me to get it into the ground. (Considering there is about 3 feet of snow out there, it may be a while!) Anyhow, it has now been immortalized in paint. This little piece is a perfect partner for the last two, making triplets. They look great together. This one was painted on my trip to the island of Islesford, off the coast of aAcadia National Park. Perfect day, roses in just the right place, lovely harbor. It really helped that our trip to that point had all been grey, rainy, and foggy. This was pure bliss to paint.

This piece is nicely framed with a contemporary float frame.

I felt that we needed something spring like and decided on this little bird perched on a metal jug with some buttercups. So you know it wasn't done in February! I am very happy with this little (8x8) piece. I like the light on the bird, and the fresh buttercups bouncing against the blue wall leaving cool shadows. It was challenging to get the dull bronze container correct with some highlights but not too many. It's just a happy piece!

This view was straight from my porch while I was staying in Friendship - and it now graces a wall of the cottage in which I stayed. It's lovely and makes you just want to walk down next to the railing and go out to the end of the dock, where the fisherman bring in their catch. Or maybe just go down there to it and listen to the waves and harbor sounds.

I was lucky enough to have an entire week in Friendship, Maine. I stayed in a house immediately adjacent to the town dock. From my vantage point on the large farmer's porch, I had enough material to paint for the entire week. I never took my supplies off the porch! If I turned around, with my back to the street, I saw the next dock, and it was one with a lot of activity. This was June and everyone was getting ready for the season. Lobster traps and ropes and buoy of different kinds were piled and made great patterns of color. It looked great. But one day a bait truck came to deliver the necessary product. It was there a while as the delivery was negotiated and accomplished. I loved this part where the two men came together, all their attention on something between them. The perfect moment to catch. This piece was primarily done on site and touched up in the studio.

When I was painting up in Islesford, where we had a lot of rain, we also had fog. A lot of fog. How mystical it seems, even magical to look out into a white and grey world and find some motion, then shapes arranging themselves in front of you? And in this case, the whole monochromatic scene was punctuated very strongly with a bright orange/red float. Mmmm, I like this one.

This was done on a lovely day in Manchester-by-the-Sea, on the North Shore of Boston. What a beautiful day that was. There were larger and more dramatic boats around this lovely harbor, but I liked this small white one with two floats nearby. Sort of "the everyday sailor" instead of the "the watered gentry". The touch of red came from a reflected hull of another boat and I thought it was just what it needed. It looks like it might have been an easy painting, a simple boat….but they move constantly and change from every angle. I think this came out all right in spite of that!

I was painting on the town landing in Stonington and was drawn to a wonderful truck being loaded at the dock over an expanse of water. I especially loved the yellows and how they reflected in the water and seemed to respond to each other. I like that I was able to catch the man loading in the back. Putting my brushes away, a man came over to look. "That's a Stonington family business", he said. "It would be a great gift". But no, he didn't buy it.

What a wonderful discovery, finding Manchester-By-The-Sea harbor not far from my home on the North Shore of Boston. I visited with a friend whose pastel class came frequently to work. Just lovely - still a working harbor where you would not expect to find one. I liked the sunlight on this small working boat and the reflections.

This is a small piece I did while sitting on the dock in Islesford, Maine. The days had been grey with fog and rain, but the colors of the fishermen's equipment glowed through that mood and reflected in the water. I painted quickly and I meant to go back and make it more specific. But then it was clear that is was done. Now. So here it is!

When I was in Maine, I met fellow aqua-workout lovers. One lady invited me to paint at her house. She lived on the widening river that runs through Thomaston and becomes a cove to the sea.What a gorgeous view! Though she had beautiful gardens, I stayed on her deck high up and painted the water. The "at rest" refers to the seals (lower right) and birds (center) that regularly take breaks at low tide.

This was one of those paintings that seemed easy but was a challenge. I wanted to get that last light that hits the rocks and turns them almost orange, and then also softens the sky and turns greens into burnt sienna. And I had about 15 minutes to get it. I didn't get it then, but later in the studio, I could. I'm happy with it now. This piece was done from my balcony in Stonington and is of the Deer Isle Thorofare. I think the frame (one of my favorites from Documounts) sets it off nicely.

I was in the Deer Isle "downtown", about a block of small gift shops, food and galleries, looking for a place to paint. Just past the bridge, I saw a small park I'd never seen before, with lovely gardens, a nice bench, shade, and a beautiful view. Counting myself lucky, I set up and spent quite a bit of time on this one, and also worked it a bit in the studio afterward, adding glazes to bring out the canoe contrast, and softening the background. What a nice day! It would certainly be a great place for a paddle!

This is another view of the yellow house by the sea (in Stonington, ME) with it's turretted neighbor. I loved the space between them, the contrast in architecture, and the sea beyond with its many moods. This is the Deer Isle Thorofare and the  I loved it when the view softened as the fog settled. The foreground light was even and stood out because of the contrast with the fog. I also loved the way the ledges of stone rolled on their way to the view. It made you want to go out and walk on them, which I did. The silver frame complements the soft greys and blue.
