Matted "Orange Horizon"

Orange Horizon
10x10
oil on prepared paper
$295

This piece was done at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport right after "First Light" but the differences surprised me: the blue settled into the sky more lightly and a slight cloud was overhead. The sea also picked up a sense of lightness. These clear sky mornings are quite different than the ones with all the cloud drama, and quite peaceful. Looks like a beautiful day ahead!

Matted "First Light"

First Light
10x10
matted (floated) with edges of the paper showing
in a deep mat.oil on prepared paper
$295

This is another from the Coastal Sunrise series. I was indeed, painting at the crack of dawn. A guest in the house came out to look, looked at the sky and water and just said: yup, that's exactly the color out there.
Kinda reassuring....

Coastal Sunrise #5 (Goose Rocks Beach Morning)

Coastal Sunrise #5 (Goose Rocks Beach Morning)
36"x36"
Oil on canvas
Sold

This is the largest piece in the exhibit and one of the very first large ones I have done in my career. The director of the art gallery encouraged me to paint larger and I have done that several times now. I absolutely love it. When I face a canvas taller than I am to work on (on the easel, of course, I'm not that short!), it feels like I am taking on a challenging adversary! Maybe I need to do more of them. Yep.

Framed "Pink Sky, Orange Light"

Framed "Pink Sky, Orange Light"
8x8 oil on canvas
contemporary maple frame
$195

This is one of the smaller studio paintings. With these, I started smaller and then gradually built up my size until I was at the 3x3 foot largest piece. There is a bit of shine on the canvas in this pic and I will be getting another, better, photo soon. Though it is small, I think it somehow manages to hold the large sky, don't you think?

"Coastal Sunrise #1 (Promise)"

"Coastal Sunrise #1 (Promise)"
Oil on Panel
12x24
Sold

This piece, the first of the Coastal Sunrise Series, is the first stage of several paintings from a spectacular sunrise. A long format makes it even more dramatic, and it was a struggle to get the center area as smooth and still as the upper and lower areas are dramatic.

This piece is available as a giclee at my store. Click here to visit the site.

"Coastal Sunrise #2 (Breaking Through)"

"Coastal Sunrise #2 (Breaking Through)"
24x30
Oil on Canvas
Sold
available as giclee on paper or canvas (click here)
soon available as a card

This piece was the star of the show - It was on the postcard announcing the exhibit.  This piece seems to carry all of the energy of the whole series within its edges. It is part of a series (Coastal Sunrise #1,2, etc.) that tell the story of a morning's sunrise at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. It is interesting how a show takes the power of all the pieces and creates a synergy that goes beyond. This exhibit certainly did, and I loved the feeling of being deeply involved in those skies in the months leading up to it. I want to share with you the artist statement for the exhibit, which took the form of a poem.

LYNNE SCHULTE

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“COASTAL SUNRISE” EXHIBITION

I want the viewer to be there with me, and to feel and see what I have experienced. In the Coastal Sunrise series, I celebrate the amazing skies of September mornings.

Look up
Up I can see forever
The sky is never as big as it is over the sea
I look down
Sand, rock, and the cool water around my ankles
bring me back to now.
The new day’s sky marked by the most brilliant color is far too much to contemplate in its hugeness
My smallness is comforting
My smallness is frightening
So I bend down, touch a shell, a stone, or a feather.
Then look up again

I pick up the brush and paint
and am transported far beyond myself to what is deepest and whole
I bring the sky inside.

"Silver Lining #2"

"Silver Lining"
24x30
Contemporary maple frame
$740

I did this piece in a small size on site and then re-did it in the studio. I love this version, in fact it may be my favorite from the whole series. Though that is really hard to call! But this piece is unique in its coloring, and the feeling that comes through is of a magical silvery grey day. And it is still available....one of the few larger ones left. The teeny tiny person and boat give you the sense of majestic scale.

"Feathery Sky"

"Feathery Sky"
10x10 Oil on Prepared Paper
Matted in an extra deep mat and framed under glass
with a contemporary maple frame

$360

This painting is one of those get up early and paint the sunrise mornings. It is amazing what clouds do. They change so much in a second! By the time you get to the top, the bottom has changed, and vice versa. But, if you capture it accurately in real time, it will all go together.

"Wisps Over Flats"

"Wisps Over Flats"
plein aire painting
10x10 oil on prepared paper
floating in a wide, deep archival mat
Framed under glass with a maple contemporary frame
$360

This soft and beautiful piece was painted from the glassed in front porch of a cottage on Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine.  I just loved the flats when the tide ebbed and made unpredictible ripples in the sand, exposing treasures underneath. The ledges you see in the painting would dissapear almost entirely at high tide. The cloud patterns that morning were a perfect couterpoint to the sand shapes. What would you say? Is this a skyscape or a sea scape?

Blue Skies

Blue Skies

Oil on panel 8x8"
Genre: Skyscape
Contemporary Light Wood Frame
$195

I thought it would be nice to show something besides flowers. This piece is the first one from my "Coastal Sunrise" series which I showed in May at the Marblehead Art Association It is a small studio painting created after a wonderful painting week at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. All in this series are framed.

I still can't see the title of this piece without smiling, because it was the title of the song sung by the school department all-city chorus in Waltham, MA during my first year there as an arts administrator. Oh, the whole stage full of kids singing just took my breath away.
