"Red Boat"

6x6 oil on panel

$295

It's a good idea not to get too complacent. At all......It was my last day in Rockland. I had struggled all week to put the learnings from Carol Marine's class into my normal way of working, and had finally had a pretty good day on Thursday. So I took on this boatyard (see below) I LOVED the way the tugboat in drydock contrasted with historical and contemporary vessels both in and out of the water. Well, first my panel fell into my palette. Then I had to bungee everything because of the wind. And when I started painting, it was like painting with stickum on formica. I was painting on a surface I did not realize was extra slick. It was awful, but I kept plugging. The "drawing" part was very hard, getting all the parts in scale and place.Three hours later, I finally had a basic cover on the panel and quit. Trust me, you will not see this one., it was really bad. So I had to end the week with something I could handle successfully.

So I turned around and found the little red sailboat, waiting patiently for me in a small cove. Simple, straightforward, kinda sweet. Ahhhh. at last. A better ending to my two weeks in Maine.

This piece is nicely framed with a contemporary float frame.

"Art in the Barn Barn" (Framed)

Art in the Barn Barn
8x8
oil on panel
Natural Maple Contemporary Frame
$190

This time is perfect for this painting! Tomorrow, my friend Barb Harrold and I are traveling to Cushing, Maine (near Rockland, ME) for "Art in the Barn" a two person show in this lovely barn pictured in the painting. It is on the grounds of the Cushing Historical Society. Cushing is where the whole pink chair project started, just last year, in June, when I stayed there to paint. We will have a reception on Friday, and be open all day Saturday and Sunday. I will be showing my whole pink chair suite, along with all of the new paintings that I did this June in Maine. Barb will be showing her soft sculpture creatures, puppets, and hats, and she will have her sewing machine set up so she can demonstrate her techniques. I put 6000 steps on my pedometer just packing my car.

Rockland Gazebo (framed)

This is the second painting this gazebo has shown up in. It sits in a garden by the sea and provides a lovely resting place for many tourists and locals. The same gazebo, in Rockland, Maine, was in my painting "Garden by the Sea" from the Pink Chair Project.

When I was in Rockland I was very taken with a pretty town park by the edge of the sea and took pictures there three times. I watched these beautiful poppies open and expand and start to flop a bit during the time I was there. There was also a small gazebo. While I was there, I met a woman, an artist also, who arrived on a bike, and who maintained the garden. When I asked, she said she was not part of a garden club, but she just did it because she wanted to, including putting plants in and maintenance. This painting was not working until I put her in and later I realized why and the connection to Mom. Mom was above all, committed to people around her. In each of her areas of connection, she had many friends and she was always contributing to some aspect of making her community better. Not only is there a community of 25 poppies in this piece, everyone different, but when I put the gardener in, the piece came together. Its not about the poppies, its about community and contributing to make a more beautiful world, another surprise. My art always knows where I am going and it always gets there first.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This show is currently traveling and unreserved work will be available for purchase after the travel is completed, around mid-2014. Paintings may be held until then with a 10% down payment. E-mail me or see my pink chair project blog, for details. High quality giclee prints are available on paper or canvas in a range of sizes as well as blank cards with this image. E-mail me for further information.

This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.
