The sun had finally come out on Islesford Maine, and we had one more day to paint in our Henry Isaac/Ashley Bryan Labor Day Weekend workshop. (What a joy THAT was) But seeing the sun after nothing but fog and rain brought our some colors in me I didn't know I had, and it brought out a looseness I can't usually get even if I try. Go ahead and bid, you might get this for a bargain price!

I was painting off the porch in Friendship and wanted to do another small painting before I closed down for the day. But I had been painting the harbor (to my right) all day and wanted something different. Lookng across the street, I saw a garden with irises I had not really noticed before, hidden as it was by trees and parking. I enjoyed painting this even though the rocks made me insane (only for a while!)

This was the first time I did a bouquet cluster with the purpose of getting the light on it. All the flowers are from my garden. It is amazing just how many you can cram into a 6x6 panel!

This little piece is a perfect partner for the last two, making triplets. They look great together. This one was painted on my trip to the island of Islesford, off the coast of aAcadia National Park. Perfect day, roses in just the right place, lovely harbor. It really helped that our trip to that point had all been grey, rainy, and foggy. This was pure bliss to paint.

This piece is nicely framed with a contemporary float frame.

Sometimes it feels good just to put a flower in front of me, light it up , and paint happily away. It's not a big important gallery painting, but these bring me a lot of joy!  I like the unusual composition that the curving veronica makes with the daisies off-center. This one makes me happy. Here, I am focusing on the light and I especially like it when I get further away and see the shadow on the background.

Here's another ode to summer in the middle of winter. I think posting flowers is a good idea, don't you? Last summer, I was sad when a big storm knocked down all my delphinium just as they filled out. But the upside is I got to pick massive handfuls of them for the house. This one was lucky enough to go to the studio and get painted. I am getting excited about painting flowers with strong shadows from a strong close light!

This is the last in the Cape Cod Series from June 2014. I'll be back!  Here I found a couple sunbathing and just hanging around while the sun glimmered on the water. Ah, how nice, how lovely, how I'd like to be there right now!  I love the snow fence and its purple and blue shadows in this one!

This view was straight from my porch while I was staying in Friendship - and it now graces a wall of the cottage in which I stayed. It's lovely and makes you just want to walk down next to the railing and go out to the end of the dock, where the fisherman bring in their catch. Or maybe just go down there to it and listen to the waves and harbor sounds.

When I visited `Maine, I was taken by the working waterfront and it has become my primary subject matter now. The piece shows a couple of lobstermen checking their traps behind a field of buttercups in Friendship, Maine. Recently, I heard that the lobster boats built in Friendship are considered the best.

I had totally forgotten about this one, too, before I unearthed it recently. I cannot remember where I painted it, but I think it was out of my back window when I moved to Vermont. I love the rich colors and the feeling of transition.

This is a second piece discovered lurking in my drawer that I decided I like. It was done from the forest floor found at Haystack Mountain School Of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. The amazing boreal forest there is rich in lichens, mosses, roots, balsams, ferns, and  tiny sea urchins dropped by the gulls. It is a most wonderful collage. I love walking there and especially love the roots that ladder the surface in wonderful twisting ways and they spread over the massive rocks and ledges.

OK, Now I am going to have some fun here. Because I am working on large work for an upcoming show, I have not done small paintings in a while. Recently I cleaned my studio and made some cool discoveries of great little work that I have never posted. I am putting these up for auction at low starting prices so that they can find a good home! So much better than sitting in a drawer!

This one's title came easily. I think I did it while experimenting with new watercolors.

This sad bunny misses his child, who was lost in the Newtown, CT tragedy. All funds raised from the auction will be donated to a fund that assists the families in that town. In my 50 day project, I have been alternating between realistic and abstract paintings. This piece is an attempt to bring the two together; the defined subject matter along with the range of brushes, palette knife and freer techniques. I like the bold contrasts and the complimentary color scheme. I think we've got "essence of iris" and "essence of tulip leaves"  for example, even though you may not see all clearly. It's challenging to step back from spelling it all out.

I am participating in the Hurricane Sandy fundraiser through Daily Paintworks. Artists donate a painting for auction and all profits go to Hurricane relief. I am currently looking for the best place to send funds and am open to suggestions.
The piece I am entering is now on auction. The minimum bid of $150 is far below the regular price of $470 so you are likely to get a good deal! The location pictured is at Colton Pond in Vermont, along rte.100 just past the intersection of rte. 4 and rte.100. A nice quiet and beautiful place to stop for a picnic! Long range views of the mountains and a very private setting. I was the only car there the day I painted this. It is a good sized piece at 12"x25"

This 50 day project has been a lot of fun because I do things I would not normally do. Which, brings up complicated questions, such as "why not"?  Normally I don't use much orange, or do abstracts, or have so much fun when I am painting. Hmmmm.

I am experimenting with palette knife. This piece is about 90% done using that technique. If you've never watched the sunset at Menemsha in Martha's Vinyard, put it on your list. The sky is so big here, I don't know how I got it int an 8x10. Not to worry, I've got a bigger one in the works.

"Perch"

The bird is one of the several I keep for models; my young students love them and perch them on lots of different things to draw or paint them. I decided to join them this day, and perched the (who knows what kind of) bird on an antique metal mug (bronze, I think) that I found at a flea market. I did love the way his feathers got quite pink with a few spots of red to accent the basic peach-y color.

I was painting in the yard of a friend in Vermont, and really liked the flying heron weathervane that had been inserted into a rock as a sculpture. As I painted it, I noticed a birdhouse and fit it into the painting. What I really like about this piece are the trees all across the top and the "conversation" between the two objects..
