This little guy is the newest addition to the "Working Waterfront" series. Sometimes I like to work small, sometimes just do creative play. This started as one of those, but I really started to get into it and I like it and now it has formally been admitted to the group. I love the way the yellow and orange-red just bounce around the shop inside the window, and the way the ones in the window kind of shimmer. Hmm, I wonder what tha shop is like now, in the winter? Even with the little stove there, it must be awfully cold.

I felt that we needed something spring like and decided on this little bird perched on a metal jug with some buttercups. So you know it wasn't done in February! I am very happy with this little (8x8) piece. I like the light on the bird, and the fresh buttercups bouncing against the blue wall leaving cool shadows. It was challenging to get the dull bronze container correct with some highlights but not too many. It's just a happy piece!

This piece will grab you and not let you go. It is quite large and uses the bright colors found on the dock. The lobster fisherman is waiting for the season to be ready; that will be when the lobsters are at the correct stage and the laws allow. In Maine, in June, there are piles of equipment on almost every dock. There are traps in every color, floats that are painted in the registered colors of each family, stacks of pallets (which is what those brown things are) The large blue container and the one on top of it are huge coolers and they are full of mackeral for bait. I watched one day as container after container dumped the mackeral into a special holding tank. In this piece, through the pallets on the right you can see through to additional traps and a snatch of the sea.

Through all this identification of stuff, what I really like is how the colors and shapes play against each other, forming an almost abstract composition.

It was hard to set up the composition of this piece but deciding to use the 5x7 rather than the 6x6 worked for it. I like that the little bird is denying parental ownership of the limes.

Well now I know that that tall pear is a bully. Look what he is doing today! Pushing her ahead of him into the copper bowl so that she can take the brunt of the unknown! Even the color is kinda evil.

OK, those red pears looked so well behaved yesterday, but today one has become much more domineering. I love how these items take on new lives all their own, depending on how you place them. There's always a story somewhere. They are close, next to each other, but definitely at odds and the one in the back looks like a bully to me.

Finally! It's the first piece I did back in my home studio after my Carol Marine workshop and after my week painting plein aire in Maine.  I have always loved the beautiful red pears and the glow and sparkle of cherries so I chose to do them first. The hardest part was the white oval soap dish the pear is sitting in. It's hard enough to get an elipse from a round object, and now an oval is something else entirely. But I am happy with this. I do not know how long I will do still life this way. Currently it is a good way for me to solidify the learning I had in the workshop. But I also find I am looking at landscape and florals differently so let's all just watch this new direction unfold!

This is another piece I did in Carol Marine's class in Maine. Let's just say that this was a challenge. Any idea just how many yellows are in that yellow pepper? Especially if you had to wipe it all out and start over. I like the way the peppers seem to be having a conversation, trying to come to something in common.

This sad bunny misses his child, who was lost in the Newtown, CT tragedy. All funds raised from the auction will be donated to a fund that assists the families in that town. It's my way to deal with what cannot be dealt with..... The bird is one of the several I keep for models; my young students love them and perch them on lots of different things to draw or paint them. I decided to join them this day, and perched the (who knows what kind of) bird on an antique metal mug (bronze, I think) that I found at a flea market. I did love the way his feathers got quite pink with a few spots of red to accent the basic peach-y color.

This sweetheart misses his owner.
Torn by the horrific events in Newtown, Connecticut, I didn't know what to do or how to respond. I decided to think of the view of the toys, whose owners will never come home again. This is the first one I painted. For this one, I will donate all of the funds raised to an appropriate source to help the bereaved families of the beloved children who were lost.

I still hated that still life so I did this painting by taking shapes and colors from it but puting them down anywhere I pleased. Now I like the lively action in it.
