Here's another ode to summer in the middle of winter. I think posting flowers is a good idea, don't you? Last summer, I was sad when a big storm knocked down all my delphinium just as they filled out. But the upside is I got to pick massive handfuls of them for the house. This one was lucky enough to go to the studio and get painted. I am getting excited about painting flowers with strong shadows from a strong close light!

This tiny piece was done sitting in the car....on a crisp autumn day in Woodstock, Vermont that was too windy to go outside. It's another small gem I found in my treasure hunt, and I have always loved the simplicity of it. I particularly like the way the evergreens stand out. I always enjoy that part of fall, seeing them return after being hidden by all the deciduous trees. They are like the bones of the landscape. Now it's your chance to own it!

OK, Now I am going to have some fun here. Because I am working on large work for an upcoming show, I have not done small paintings in a while. Recently I cleaned my studio and made some cool discoveries of great little work that I have never posted. I am putting these up for auction at low starting prices so that they can find a good home! So much better than sitting in a drawer!

This one's title came easily. I think I did it while experimenting with new watercolors.

An update for my readers:

I am restarting my Daily Paintworks blog. After a recent workshop with Carol Marine, I have returned all refreshed and inspired! I will be posting some pieces that I have posted before, but these will be now available at auction for a great price! Some will be new works inspired by the workshop, and oil sketches done on location as I work plein aire on pieces that will become larger works in the studio. I had a lovely bunch of roses and was experimenting with how to make them freshly and quickly. This is one that I love: It just worked and doing anythig else would have not made it better.

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. In my 50 day project, I have been alternating between realistic and abstract paintings. This piece is an attempt to bring the two together; the defined subject matter along with the range of brushes, palette knife and freer techniques. I like the bold contrasts and the complimentary color scheme. I think we've got "essence of iris" and "essence of tulip leaves"  for example, even though you may not see all clearly. It's challenging to step back from spelling it all out.

This 50 day project has been a lot of fun because I do things I would not normally do. Which, brings up complicated questions, such as "why not"?  Normally I don't use much orange, or do abstracts, or have so much fun when I am painting. Hmmmm.

I am experimenting with palette knife. This piece is about 90% done using that technique. If you've never watched the sunset at Menemsha in Martha's Vinyard, put it on your list. The sky is so big here, I don't know how I got it int an 8x10. Not to worry, I've got a bigger one in the works.

The bird is one of the several I keep for models; my young students love them and perch them on lots of different things to draw or paint them. I decided to join them this day, and perched the (who knows what kind of) bird on an antique metal mug (bronze, I think) that I found at a flea market. I did love the way his feathers got quite pink with a few spots of red to accent the basic peach-y color.

This piece is a favorite. I worked from a dry lotus pod and milkweed pod, drawing them freely in the paint over and over, overlapping. Then I applied paint by large and small brush, dry brush, and palette knife, absolutely enjoying the process. Some sections disappeared and some remained. I love the colors bouncing off of each other. I like how the acrylic allows heavy application of paint and many layers in quick succession. One of the segments of the lotus pod had just one seed in it and it felt special to me, so I gave it a great spot in the composition.

The Song Garden is a magical place near the Augustus St. Gaudens National Historic site in Cornish NH. Open to all, come in and pick a bouquet, leaving a donation. Up the hill is a Tea Room in a cottage once used as an artist studio, again, help yourself and leave a donation. A lovely place and I had it almost all to myself for two days.

Pretty wild color. I think the christmas cactus is a really unusual flower. In this one I thought I would make the most lively background I could think up!
