A favorite place on Cape Cod is the Salt Pond National Seashore Visitor Center in Eastham. It has everything you need, from helpful rangers, bathrooms, maps, and a gorgeous view out of the back. This is it, and my back is about 20 feet from the door, and I am on a patio.  Down below, you see people walking and kayaks getting ready to go explore, marsh, streams, and ocean in the distance plus an iconic little cabin that is positioned just right. I have painted this place three times because I like it so much!

There's a wonderful bayside beach off Rte 6A (the scenic route up Cape Cod, all cottages, flowers, marshes, and great shops). It's called Gray's Beach and it has a great boardwalk that takes you way out into the marsh. It is to the left of this scene. I paint here frequently - parking is easy as long as it is not high beach season and there are lots of views to see. The tide comes and goes. When I did this it was low tide and what artists call "the magic hour" when the light is intense and warm as the sun starts its downward journey. The time is so often short to catch the light and often you just have to take a picture. This time however, I painted it on site and am pleased with how that green just glows.

One of my all-time favorites, I wanted to put this up again to share it with you. It is one of my "Coastal Sunrise " series of paintings that I did in Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, ME. The amazing sunrise just filled every inch of my being and the incredible quiet space between the layers of clouds above and below drew me in. It was the first to sell of the series, and I spirited it away from the show over the day the gallery wasn't open so that I could get it digitally captured to make giclees. They are now available in a range of sizes and in both canvas and paper. The giclees are a perfect match for color with the original. I also have some cards made from the design. This piece was painted standing high on the cliff near the GayHead lighthouse on Martha's Vineyard. The amazing cliffs underneath the lighthouse are multicolors of clay. The land is fragile, and the cliffs are falling into the sea at an amazing clip. I read recently that the lighthouse is likely to be lost because there is not enough land to move it. Nearby there is a new Native American Museum. I felt I could see forever here.

It was the first day of my painting outdoors season. I went to my favorite place, Rockport, and decided to start with a classic, Motif #1. It was very cold by the sea. Because it was the first time that year, I forgot stuff. Like my solvent. Like my white paint.Like my gloves. I did the best I could but it remained in my studio for two years and every time I looked at it, I could feel the chill in the air. This week, I took it out and dressed it up and warmed it a bit, allowing some bells and whistles, including a bit of white paint. I don't know if I like it better of not! Comments welcome. It doesn't look quite so chilly now.

In my 50 day project, I have been alternating between realistic and abstract paintings. This piece is an attempt to bring the two together; the defined subject matter along with the range of brushes, palette knife and freer techniques. I like the bold contrasts and the complimentary color scheme. I think we've got "essence of iris" and "essence of tulip leaves"  for example, even though you may not see all clearly. It's challenging to step back from spelling it all out.

I am participating in the Hurricane Sandy fundraiser through Daily Paintworks. Artists donate a painting for auction and all profits go to Hurricane relief. I am currently looking for the best place to send funds and am open to suggestions.
The piece I am entering is now on auction. The minimum bid of $150 is far below the regular price of $470 so you are likely to get a good deal! The location pictured is at Colton Pond in Vermont, along rte.100 just past the intersection of rte. 4 and rte.100. A nice quiet and beautiful place to stop for a picnic! Long range views of the mountains and a very private setting. I was the only car there the day I painted this. It is a good sized piece at 12"x25"

This 50 day project has been a lot of fun because I do things I would not normally do. Which, brings up complicated questions, such as "why not"?  Normally I don't use much orange, or do abstracts, or have so much fun when I am painting. Hmmmm.

I am experimenting with palette knife. This piece is about 90% done using that technique. If you've never watched the sunset at Menemsha in Martha's Vinyard, put it on your list. The sky is so big here, I don't know how I got it int an 8x10. Not to worry, I've got a bigger one in the works.

At Gay Head Lighthouse in Martha's Vineyard the view is just amazing. An area with shops and snack bars has been built near the esteemed view, and bus after bus come by to see the lighthouse above the spectacular clay cliffs. But across from it is a view just as amazing near the Native American Museum, and I set up there to paint, showing the huge sky and the crashing surf far below. I had very few people come by though I was out in the open. Amazing what moving a bit beyond will get you in beauty.

Remembrance - The Pink Chair Project" #22 "Sky Blue Pink"

I thought this was the last one. It was to be large (end with a splash!). It was my last frame that I had purchased for the show. And the image was clearly an ending one, with a beautiful break in a cloudy rough dark sky beckoning Mom. The title was to be “Welcome Break” But as usual, Mom had other ideas and she let me know. All went along as normal with the painting. I started with just what I wanted, then got mired in the difficulties as the piece progresses. There’s something called the “chaos theory” that applies to painting and this was no exception. I was trapped in the clouds and they just wouldn’t work. So I took the photo to a black and white on my computer to see the value patterns better. Next to it was a photo I hadn’t noticed before of the same spot. What? The sky is lighter in this one? It glows! And the clouds are reflecting in the water! So I pushed it further and made all the colors brighter and took it back to the studio where I started putting whites on with a big brush and adjusting many grays to be more blue and purple. Then I got to the water, which was thinly painted over an orangish under-painting. I noticed that area looks like an expression Mom used to say “sky blue pink with orange stripes”, a color I could never visualize. As I painted the reflections in, I heard in my head: “sky blue pink with orange stripes” “sky blue pink with orange stripes” over and over until I was done and stepped back. Whoa! The sense of doom and gloom was gone and a sense of joy was apparent. Its like Mom said: Make it pretty, because I am not going anywhere so I want to enjoy it. You still have painting to do. And so I do. I already have 4 paintings in my head. There will be more chapters to this story.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

Done plein aire on a spectacular day for skies, this painting and Blue Skies #2 are great together. The sky was so big the horizon had to be VERY low, and I like it that way; it helps to tell the story.
