I stayed on Cape Cod for a week to paint, at the home of a friend who lived in an area I had not yet discovered, a settled island called Seconset with lots of lovely nooks and crannies between the houses. This particular spot was shown to me as if showing a treasure, a hidden spot - and it was a treasure. Though it was overcast, it was quiet and lovely at the end of the access area, and no one bothered me the whole time I was there!

Remembering good days in this one. I even have it in my office now, but I will give it up if you want to buy it! This painting is one from Rockport, Maine. I was at the little park on the harbor and near the building there. While I was there a schol bus brought a whole bunch of happy kids to swim at the beach that is hidden behind the spit of land in front. But the flag announces its location!

I was again trying to use my limited strokes, but this time I did not count them, just tried hard to make every stroke count. But I had a problem, the rain started and I was only half finished. I was able to finish it in the studio, however, and I like how it came out!

This piece is nicely framed with a contemporary float frame.

This is the last in the Cape Cod Series from June 2014. I'll be back!  Here I found a couple sunbathing and just hanging around while the sun glimmered on the water. Ah, how nice, how lovely, how I'd like to be there right now!  I love the snow fence and its purple and blue shadows in this one!

This is from the same place I painted from yesterday at the National Seashore Visitor Center in Eastham on Cape Cod. Looking to the right is a place where people get their kayaks and gather to paddle out together. It's fun to watch them. In the distance is marsh and ocean, and to the right is a walkway. Ah, another great summer day to remember when it is -5 degrees outside.

A favorite place on Cape Cod is the Salt Pond National Seashore Visitor Center in Eastham. It has everything you need, from helpful rangers, bathrooms, maps, and a gorgeous view out of the back. This is it, and my back is about 20 feet from the door, and I am on a patio.  Down below, you see people walking and kayaks getting ready to go explore, marsh, streams, and ocean in the distance plus an iconic little cabin that is positioned just right. I have painted this place three times because I like it so much!

When I was in Seconsett painting on Cape Cod, every day I went past a certain curve in the road that bordered the little harbor and beach - a private place of peace. I painted there a couple of times and also took pictures. Above the scene an osprey family was watching the activity below and never seemed to be bothered by the people or traffic - it was their own little world up there. I was glad to get the shot and be able to do this piece in the studio.

There's a wonderful bayside beach off Rte 6A (the scenic route up Cape Cod, all cottages, flowers, marshes, and great shops). It's called Gray's Beach and it has a great boardwalk that takes you way out into the marsh. It is to the left of this scene. I paint here frequently - parking is easy as long as it is not high beach season and there are lots of views to see. The tide comes and goes. When I did this it was low tide and what artists call "the magic hour" when the light is intense and warm as the sun starts its downward journey. The time is so often short to catch the light and often you just have to take a picture. This time however, I painted it on site and am pleased with how that green just glows.

This view was straight from my porch while I was staying in Friendship - and it now graces a wall of the cottage in which I stayed. It's lovely and makes you just want to walk down next to the railing and go out to the end of the dock, where the fisherman bring in their catch. Or maybe just go down there to it and listen to the waves and harbor sounds.

During my time in Islesford - far too short a time - i was socked in by fog or rain during most of the painting time. Somehow, it just seemed to make one painting after another with a different look than I was used to. There's a lot more to a seascape than blue sky over blue sea. This was FAR more interesting to me. What amazing things weather does! This morning, the fishing boats in the harbor rocked gently waiting for their owners. There were fewer and fewer of these boats each day and it was like painting an endangered species!

The sunsets are lovely on this side of Deer Isle, which faces west just north-west of Stonington. This piece was painted at Burnt Cove, again with my steering wheel easel. There is a gift shop just past where I parked, and all I saw was a long old interesting looking building. After I had been there a while, a woman came over and told me I could go down to the beach if I wanted - and then she said oh,you are painting. Then she said she needed to get back to work. So after I was finished, I went around the bend a bit and found her with her mother on a picnic table creating some crafts. The gift shop, called Clam Factory Gifts, was in an old building that seemed to go on forever. I stayed quite a while and had a personal tour through it. The most impressive were the dollhouses the woman made, but there was also a large variety of other gifts in the jumble in the back including photography and paintings/drawings. It was a real "downeast experience"!  And just a short way up 15A north, you will actually come to a town called "Sunset".

I thought this was the last one. It was to be large (end with a splash!). It was my last frame that I had purchased for the show. And the image was clearly an ending one, with a beautiful break in a cloudy rough dark sky beckoning Mom. The title was to be “Welcome Break” But as usual, Mom had other ideas and she let me know. All went along as normal with the painting. I started with just what I wanted, then got mired in the difficulties as the piece progresses. There’s something called the “chaos theory” that applies to painting and this was no exception. I was trapped in the clouds and they just wouldn’t work. So I took the photo to a black and white on my computer to see the value patterns better. Next to it was a photo I hadn’t noticed before of the same spot. What? The sky is lighter in this one? It glows! And the clouds are reflecting in the water! So I pushed it further and made all the colors brighter and took it back to the studio where I started putting whites on with a big brush and adjusting many grays to be more blue and purple. Then I got to the water, which was thinly painted over an orangish under-painting. I noticed that area looks like an expression Mom used to say “sky blue pink with orange stripes”, a color I could never visualize. As I painted the reflections in, I heard in my head: “sky blue pink with orange stripes” “sky blue pink with orange stripes” over and over until I was done and stepped back. Whoa! The sense of doom and gloom was gone and a sense of joy was apparent. Its like Mom said: Make it pretty, because I am not going anywhere so I want to enjoy it. You still have painting to do. And so I do. I already have 4 paintings in my head. There will be more chapters to this story.

She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

When My friend and I went to Cape Cod to paint, we both found it very difficult to get started. It was too sunny and hot; I couldn’t set up the easel with the umbrella because the wind would blow it away. I set up the chair and then realized that the tide was coming in too fast to do the painting that way. Then I moved the chair and tried again, but the rocks kept getting covered with too much water. And my feet hurt, and I felt all discombobulated. So I did the best I could and when we quit, was delighted to find a lunch place with air conditioning. Later in the studio, I reworked the painting and combined three different images. What made it work was more rocks, bigger rocks, and water coming right under the chair.

Each time I start a painting series, I have incredible barriers to overcome. This trip was no exception. There’s that lesson from Mom again – where there’s a will there’s a way……..and my own translations: just keep on keeping on, and put one foot in front of the other…….eventually you will make it. Thanks Mom, again, for this lesson.

The painting was done from a photo taken at the end of an awesome boat ride on a pontoon boat at Desert Lake Resort, the kind of dreamy, all the time in the world kind of day. My cousin Bill drove the boat, his wife Marnie made the lunch, and "Mom" held the towels. We looked for loons, picnicked and swam in a cove off the boat. It was a perfect day. The title of the piece came to me out of the blue and for a while I have wondered what it meant. I thought that perhaps it was because both Mom and I have suffered from painful feet, and we both would have loved having the cool water wash over them. But a gift of understanding came from Barb Bodengraven, a writer who stated in an article about me that the chairs arms were "open to whatever treasures the incoming tide will bring". Yes. That's it! My mother had experienced the joys of the day with us and took that same openness to all of the events her life would offer. She just jumped right in at every stage. Her feet were wet with life!

Some winter days are so beautiful, especially when you have been cooped up in the house for a while. And, sometimes, when you get to walk down the long boardwalk to the beach at Plum Island in the Parker River Wildlife Preserve, you see combinations of sunlight trees, sand dunes and grasses that are just lovely. This was one of those days. This lovely place is near Newburyport, MA, another favorite spot, and I am 25 minutes from each of them. Very lucky!

It always feels good to be painting on Cape Cod. I am hoping I can do some of that this summer. Here I am at Grays Beach, with my back to the parking lot, and I can see the lifeguard station just beyond the cedars and just a strip of the water. I like how the foreground was so warm, and I am crazy about the umbrella!

This piece was done at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport right after "First Light" but the differences surprised me: the blue settled into the sky more lightly and a slight cloud was overhead. The sea also picked up a sense of lightness. These clear sky mornings are quite different than the ones with all the cloud drama, and quite peaceful. Looks like a beautiful day ahead!

This is one of the Coastal Sunrise plein aire series of morning paintings from Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. So many variations in that blue provide interest, and the punch of the sky stripes give the perfect accent!
