An update for my readers:

I am restarting my Daily Paintworks blog. After a recent workshop with Carol Marine, I have returned all refreshed and inspired! I will be posting some pieces that I have posted before, but these will be now available at auction for a great price! Some will be new works inspired by the workshop, and oil sketches done on location as I work plein aire on pieces that will become larger works in the studio. These great sunflowers were in a pot in front of the garage in our house when we lived in Thetford, VT. I liked the way they looked with the stone wall and the grass behind them. They were the short kind that look great in a pot. This piece is matted with a 3" archival mat to 12x14. It is part of the series "A Year in Bloom", 365 paintings of flowers done in one year.

I have been painting a lot of autumn colors lately and wanted to see how Wolf Kahn did it, so I did this color study from him.

Ok, it is time to start showing you some of the things I am doing with my 50 days project. One of the things I am really enjoying and learning from at the same time is my color studies. They fit in nicely when there is just a small window of time to paint. I take a repro of a painting by an artist whose work I admire, and copy the colors. I also copy the relative size/proportion in the picture, but do NOT copy the representational image. I find this allows me to figure out what they are doing that I like so much, without being sidetracked by trying to do the same image. My goal is to somehow assimilate all this understanding so that when I am ready to move ahead in January, I will have more understanding under my belt. This piece honors Richard Schmid, a fabulous realistic artist, who wrote the book "Alla Prima". I thought his color was mostly neutral, but what a masterly way he works in delightful touches of color that bring the piece alive, like the pink and turquoise blue in this piece.

Everyone that paints flowers has to paint an orchid sometime. While my favorite are the more delicate and wild ones, like the "Nodding Ladies Tresses" that were near our pond when we lived in Vermont, I got this one at Valentines Day and painted it for my husband. But it's OK to sell it!


This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 card sets (sets of 5 different blank cards) available on Etsy.

The piece is from streamside in Vermont - I can't remember where (unusual for me) but maybe it is good because it could be in any of a gazillion places in Vermont.

This piece was done at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport right after "First Light" but the differences surprised me: the blue settled into the sky more lightly and a slight cloud was overhead. The sea also picked up a sense of lightness. These clear sky mornings are quite different than the ones with all the cloud drama, and quite peaceful. Looks like a beautiful day ahead!

Some of the best painting opportunities are found in the town of Stonington, Maine. It's enough off the beaten path to avoid huge crowds, and the hills surrounding the harbor make dramatic compositions. I painted this right off the porch I was staying in. I love painting on porches!

Furst Poppy and Sage was one of the first pieces sold when the show was up and remains popular. This was not only the first poppy of the season, but the first one I remember growing! The sage is just a lovely accent to it.

Ah, the memories. I painted this while it was raining by our little pond in Vermont. I was roaring along in my series and wanted to paint in spite of the weather. So I set up my easel and a great big beach umbrella and finished this one. Everyone loves it; You can feel the drops in the water and see the reflections of the trees across the way.

"A Year in Bloom" was a floral series that I did while I lived in Vermont. I created 365 paintings of flowers, with about 85% of them oils and the rest watercolor. The images were used to create series of cards and you can see them on line.
