I was painting on the town landing in Stonington and was drawn to a wonderful truck being loaded at the dock over an expanse of water. I especially loved the yellows and how they reflected in the water and seemed to respond to each other. I like that I was able to catch the man loading in the back. Putting my brushes away, a man came over to look. "That's a Stonington family business", he said. "It would be a great gift". But no, he didn't buy it.

This was one of those paintings that seemed easy but was a challenge. I wanted to get that last light that hits the rocks and turns them almost orange, and then also softens the sky and turns greens into burnt sienna. And I had about 15 minutes to get it. I didn't get it then, but later in the studio, I could. I'm happy with it now. This piece was done from my balcony in Stonington and is of the Deer Isle Thorofare. I think the frame (one of my favorites from Documounts) sets it off nicely.

This is another view of the yellow house by the sea (in Stonington, ME) with it's turretted neighbor. I loved the space between them, the contrast in architecture, and the sea beyond with its many moods. This is the Deer Isle Thorofare and the  I loved it when the view softened as the fog settled. The foreground light was even and stood out because of the contrast with the fog. I also loved the way the ledges of stone rolled on their way to the view. It made you want to go out and walk on them, which I did. The silver frame complements the soft greys and blue.

There is nothing like June in Maine, and Stonington which is built on granite ledges is no exception. This field of wildflowers just tumbled down the hill. Primary flowers were Dames Rocket, Lupines and buttercups, a beautiful combination in such glorious excess. I loved the path that led through the flowers.

This is the view from my balcony in Stonington but we are looking the other way from the previous paintings. I loved the way the birch, with it's wonderful energy, seemed to guard the entrance of a path that leads out eye to the harbor.

The sunsets are lovely on this side of Deer Isle, which faces west just north-west of Stonington. This piece was painted at Burnt Cove, again with my steering wheel easel. There is a gift shop just past where I parked, and all I saw was a long old interesting looking building. After I had been there a while, a woman came over and told me I could go down to the beach if I wanted - and then she said oh,you are painting. Then she said she needed to get back to work. So after I was finished, I went around the bend a bit and found her with her mother on a picnic table creating some crafts. The gift shop, called Clam Factory Gifts, was in an old building that seemed to go on forever. I stayed quite a while and had a personal tour through it. The most impressive were the dollhouses the woman made, but there was also a large variety of other gifts in the jumble in the back including photography and paintings/drawings. It was a real "downeast experience"!  And just a short way up 15A north, you will actually come to a town called "Sunset".

One day in Stonington I had dinner early and was very hungry. Feeling like treating myself, I went to a restaurant and ordered a glass of wine before dinner. Well, the wine was all gone before any food came by and by the end of my dinner I could feel that it had really hit me. Knowing that I couldn't drive to my rental like that, I decided to - what the heck - do another "steering wheel easel" painting of what was in front of me. My easel hooks over the steering wheel while I paint small paintings from the materials sitting on the passenger seat. (I Know, it's not so good for the car, but I've got almose 300,000 on this one and believe me, no one will notice!) I figured it couldn't hurt. Turns out I liked the painting, and after finishing, I took a walk, took a bunch of pictures and safely drove back.

This is another piece from my steering wheel easel. I love that light when the sun is so low that the water just shimmers while the sky softens. Silouettes become stronger and details fade and we are all taken in by the magic. The location of this piece is a wonderful cove near Stonington and "The Cannery" gift shop which is unseen off to the left.

This was part of my view off the deck on the place where I stayed in Stonington. Fabulous. The waterway is called the Deer Isle Thoroughfare and it is just studded with island after island and a gazillion lobster boats. It was heaven being there! I loved the way the little yellow house kept watch.

This was the first painting that I made with my driver's wheel easel (touched up in the studio) It really worked. The day was grey, misty and not condusive to outside work. I am going to call this my "no excuses easel" The flowers were primarily dame's rocket, just pouring down the hill side in the millions, I am sure, with a few lupines. Stonington, Maine is gorgeous in the spring. Ledges of granite abound, with wildflowers everywhere, backed by a special fishing village. A painter's paradise.

I'm still in Stonington, Maine with this painting. This time I am looking in the opposite direction from yesterday's painting. I felt that the window in the wal was almost alive, looking out to sea, waiting for a far away loved one.

Some of the best painting opportunities are found in the town of Stonington, Maine. It's enough off the beaten path to avoid huge crowds, and the hills surrounding the harbor make dramatic compositions. I painted this right off the porch I was staying in. I love painting on porches!
