One of my all-time favorites, I wanted to put this up again to share it with you. It is one of my "Coastal Sunrise " series of paintings that I did in Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, ME. The amazing sunrise just filled every inch of my being and the incredible quiet space between the layers of clouds above and below drew me in. It was the first to sell of the series, and I spirited it away from the show over the day the gallery wasn't open so that I could get it digitally captured to make giclees. They are now available in a range of sizes and in both canvas and paper. The giclees are a perfect match for color with the original. I also have some cards made from the design. I loved the little town of Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard. I know I'm not alone in this. And there I was painting and there were other artists there, too. One had taught me a lesson earlier in my trip. I had wanted to paint a certain area, but it was so windy, I was sure the easel would blow away! Later I went back and an artist was painting in the exact same spot I would have chosen. But he used his vehicle to block the wind and had been there 3 hours. A lesson to remember. Where there's a will there's a way!

The sunsets are lovely on this side of Deer Isle, which faces west just north-west of Stonington. This piece was painted at Burnt Cove, again with my steering wheel easel. There is a gift shop just past where I parked, and all I saw was a long old interesting looking building. After I had been there a while, a woman came over and told me I could go down to the beach if I wanted - and then she said oh,you are painting. Then she said she needed to get back to work. So after I was finished, I went around the bend a bit and found her with her mother on a picnic table creating some crafts. The gift shop, called Clam Factory Gifts, was in an old building that seemed to go on forever. I stayed quite a while and had a personal tour through it. The most impressive were the dollhouses the woman made, but there was also a large variety of other gifts in the jumble in the back including photography and paintings/drawings. It was a real "downeast experience"!  And just a short way up 15A north, you will actually come to a town called "Sunset".

This is another piece from my steering wheel easel. I love that light when the sun is so low that the water just shimmers while the sky softens. Silouettes become stronger and details fade and we are all taken in by the magic. The location of this piece is a wonderful cove near Stonington and "The Cannery" gift shop which is unseen off to the left.

In May, I exhibited my series of Coastal Sunrises at the Marblehead Art Association. Twenty five paintings grew out of a week at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. I had this canvas started but not completed in time for that show. So I took the sky I had started, and added the foreground from two resources: a photo of the grass and rocks, and from the pink chair now sitting in my studio. Then I gave each chair a coffee cup. This painting has two chairs – one for me and one for Mom – so I can show her the show she missed because she was not able to come. This painting has been reserved for delayed sale. High quality giclee prints on canvas or paper and blank cards are available; please e-mail me if you are interested.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This show is currently traveling and will be available for purchase after the travel is completed, around mid-2014. This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

This piece was done at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport right after "First Light" but the differences surprised me: the blue settled into the sky more lightly and a slight cloud was overhead. The sea also picked up a sense of lightness. These clear sky mornings are quite different than the ones with all the cloud drama, and quite peaceful. Looks like a beautiful day ahead!
