This was the first time I did a bouquet cluster with the purpose of getting the light on it. All the flowers are from my garden. It is amazing just how many you can cram into a 6x6 panel!

Sometimes it feels good just to put a flower in front of me, light it up , and paint happily away. It's not a big important gallery painting, but these bring me a lot of joy!  I like the unusual composition that the curving veronica makes with the daisies off-center. This one makes me happy. Here, I am focusing on the light and I especially like it when I get further away and see the shadow on the background.

This tiny piece was done sitting in the car....on a crisp autumn day in Woodstock, Vermont that was too windy to go outside. It's another small gem I found in my treasure hunt, and I have always loved the simplicity of it. I particularly like the way the evergreens stand out. I always enjoy that part of fall, seeing them return after being hidden by all the deciduous trees. They are like the bones of the landscape. Now it's your chance to own it!

I had totally forgotten about this one, too, before I unearthed it recently. I cannot remember where I painted it, but I think it was out of my back window when I moved to Vermont. I love the rich colors and the feeling of transition.

This is another piece I did in Carol Marine's class in Maine. Let's just say that this was a challenge. Any idea just how many yellows are in that yellow pepper? Especially if you had to wipe it all out and start over. I like the way the peppers seem to be having a conversation, trying to come to something in common.

This is one of a series of holly and poinsettias images from my "A Year in Bloom" series that I have used for years to make holiday cards from. I am finally willing to let them go. I think that will help me to make new ones next year! A purchaser will receive a few of the cards from the series as a gift.

Something new has been added! I have just decided to participate in the Hurricane Sandy fundraiser through Daily Paintworks. Artists donate a painting for auction and all profits go to Hurricane relief. I am currently looking for the best place to send funds and am open to suggestions.

The piece I am entering is now on auction. The minimum bid of $175 is far below the regular price of $470 so you are likely to get a good deal! The location pictured is at Colton Pond in Vermont, along rte.100 just past the intersection of rte. 4 and rte.100. A nice quiet and beautiful place to stop for a picnic! Long range views of the mountains and a very private setting. I was the only car there the day I painted this. It is a good sized piece at 12"x25"

The bird is one of the several I keep for models; my young students love them and perch them on lots of different things to draw or paint them. I decided to join them this day, and perched the (who knows what kind of) bird on an antique metal mug (bronze, I think) that I found at a flea market. I did love the way his feathers got quite pink with a few spots of red to accent the basic peach-y color.

A small color study done form the amazing photo on the cover of her book. As with the other artists I admired, I copied her colors and proportions but not her subject matter. The mixes of colors that take her away from "crayola" type ones and just amazing. I learn every time I look at her work.

The Song Garden is a magical place near the Augustus St. Gaudens National Historic site in Cornish NH. Open to all, come in and pick a bouquet, leaving a donation. Up the hill is a Tea Room in a cottage once used as an artist studio, again, help yourself and leave a donation. A lovely place and I had it almost all to myself for two days.

I have painted many times at the beautiful Sedgwick Gardens at Long Hill in Beverly, MA. It is the headquarters of the Trustees of Reservations, a wonderful group dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of our state's conservation lands. I decided that I would take the pink chair there and set up next to a beautiful water feature with lilies and lotuses. As I set up, I was told that I was lucky - that the lotus had just opened for the first time. It was just gorgeous in it's delicacy and I was taken by the sense of being in the presence of an ancient and exotic flower. I knew Mom would love it, so I set her chair up close to it so that she could get a good look.

I painted for several hours, always receding further away so I could have the benefit of the shade. I do like shade when I paint! I managed to stay in the same relationship to the chair so I could paint the same view. The painting came out a very rich green, and because of the oriental flower, I decided that it looked like Mom was meditating quietly behind the blooms. I like the way the leaves come in and out of focus and the way they arch over the chair like they are protecting it.

I am now sharing my current show with my readers and daily paintworks viewers. This show is currently traveling and will be available for purchase after the travel is completed, around mid-2014. This exhibit tells the story about painting a pink plastic Adirondack chair. The chair represents my mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Pedersen Schulte, of Rochester, NY, who passed on June 5th, 2011. She was a wonderful woman, full of love for everyone around her, and she loved this bright color pink. She was proud of me as an artist and would love what I am doing. I take the chair to favorite places of hers and to places or situations I know she would have liked. It is a way for me to grieve and to celebrate her life. I talk to her as I paint and make sure that she would want to be where the chair has been placed.

Another piece from the inside work series has a purple/red/gold theme with touches of blue and black. Each division has a separate theme with a abstracted connection to nature. Glints of metallics and delicate linear touches add details. A good piece for this time of year, where the garden is keeping me out of the studio. The white mat and dark wooden frame set it off.
