The sun had finally come out on Islesford Maine, and we had one more day to paint in our Henry Isaac/Ashley Bryan Labor Day Weekend workshop. (What a joy THAT was) But seeing the sun after nothing but fog and rain brought our some colors in me I didn't know I had, and it brought out a looseness I can't usually get even if I try. Go ahead and bid, you might get this for a bargain price!

I did this painting in Plymouth, right in the middle of the tourist area, with Plymouth Rock and the tour busses behind me. I had some time to paint, and was dropped off. Looking around this was what I chose. It was a lovely park on the waterfront, with large shade trees and great shadows. All that beauty, and I was drawn to this small tree, bent, twisted, and pruned until there was just one limb left. Maybe I felt a kinship....Later I found out that the tree has a huge fan club, who came out in huge numbers to prevent it from being torn down, and that it is photographed more than the Mayflower! Also people come out and water it in the winter. I guess it's struggle and survival touches us all.

I wish I had painted all fishing boats, but there is a pleasure boat there. I would have called it The SurvivorS, because of the struggle the fishermen have now and how many of them have quit.

When I was taking a summer education class at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, I took a break one summer day and followed my nose to Joe's Pond, where I sat in the grass, enjoyed the sun and did this watercolor. Was the watercolor just an excuse for sitting by the pond that day? Maybe. Sort of like fishing. I always thought that catching the fish was second to actually being out there and having a reason to do so. Joe's Pond is in northern Vermont, and I always like to think of it as the pond where they put a figure in a chair on the ice and take bets as to when the ice will break up and the pond will gobble him up. No ice that day I was there, though.



This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 card sets (sets of 5 different blank cards) available on Etsy.

Now that I have my "Steering Wheel Easel" that hooks over the wheel, I tried it out in Maine. The first day of my trip, I did three paintings in the car using the easel. I have to be honest with you. There is a limit. When I was painting this piece, it started raining, hard, and I discovered the limit on the use of the easel. You cannot paint out the window if you cannot SEE out of the window. But I did the best I could and when I got this piece home I took a good look and said "no one is going to want that, it is just too grey and boring" So I worked on it in the studio and that's how it got it's name. I think it actually looks like it could be a wet, after the rain scene! This scene is on the causeway that runs from Little Deer Isle to Deer Isle.
