This is another from the Coastal Sunrise series. I was indeed, painting at the crack of dawn. A guest in the house came out to look, looked at the sky and water and just said: yup, that's exactly the color out there.
Kinda reassuring....

Doc had a small orchard of peaches and a couple apples in his lovely mountainside house in Franklin, NC.  Franklin is a short drive from Asheville, is very near the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway, and is known for gemstones. Doc's orchard had this lovely white fence and gate. I caught it just as the light was backlighting it. The peaches had just been harvested and were ripening on a table in the back room, and I could have as many as I wanted. Another kind of heaven!

This place was absolutely heaven. I was in Franklin, NC, on the side of a mountain sitting every day on this porch. I sat to eat, to listen, to paint, to write in my journal, to think. I had it all to myself for a week. It was a safe haven in a sometimes scary world (night noises? no one else around?) I loved the orange light and the bright turquoise cushions, and the brilliant pink crepe myrtle. I also loved the tiny neon blue salamander that often kept me company.

I'm back painting in Plymouth Notch, VT, again. I love this place! This is the view with your back to Coolidge's home, and at one time it was his grandfather's farm, I think. The pond was a great reflector and the golden light just flooded everything. I like the way the distant hill went all purple; it really did that. This painting is the largest one from the travel series.

This small sugarhouse is in Woodstock, VT on rte. 12 on the way to Barnard, VT. I see it every time I leave my friend Ellen's house. I was painting in the Woodstock area in the fall, looking for just the right spot. I found it in Plymouth Notch, the home of President Calvin Coolidge. This place had it all: beauty, foliage, comfort (restaurant and bathroom), parking, and people who would stop and take a look. Plymouth Notch is an entire restored village with multiple buildings including the home the president was born in, another that he lived in as an adult including the room in which he took the oath of office, barns, church, and many others. The air was golden with the last glory of autumn. These buildings are two barns belonging to his family and house agriculture artifacts of the time. I loved all the openings, especially the one that allowed me to see right through and to the field and mountain behind it.

I was nearing the end of an autumn trip to Vermont (more about that in the next few days). I had packed the car but had just one morning to get a painting in before I had to take off for a committment. I went to The Billings Farm, a wonderful part of the National Historic Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Parkpark.  It's in Woodstock, where I used to teach high school art. I found a comfortable place to paint, out of the way near the end of the parking lot and used my few hours well. There was a horse pasture ahead of me but the horses were out of sight. Hence the title. I loved the hills in the background and the fence doing its thing, just meandering. I had a wonderful window on the world.

She commissioned me to do another painting of her store from a different angle. So this is it! The store name is Hydrangea and there were gorgeous ones in full bloom in front and in theside courtyard.

I decided to paint in Newburyport, one of my favorite nearby places. It's a traditional seafaring town, with gorgeous sea-captain homes lining High Street and more. It's also become a tourist attraction and a popular place to live. Click the link on Newburyport for pictures. I set up in the town square, a very lively place. All around me were interesting storefronts, people, flowerboxes. What did I land on as what I wanted to paint? The roof of the Maritine museum with its flag against the dramatic clouds. The title works on two levels - the obvious, plus the building colors. I think I love roofs. And flags.

Cape Porpoise in Kennebunkport Maine had a place with very interesting colors in the tide-exposed rocks and I loved the light glinting on the roof of the building and on the dock. I was painting it from the sweet spot I told you about yesterday when a few people stopped by to see what I was doing. They enjoyed the art, and we discussed some of the problems of painting. Later we maintained an on line conversation about the challenges we faced and how we did it. In the fall, they contacted me to buy the painting as a holiday gift. It was all pretty special and we still write!

During my stay at Goose Rocks Beach, I discovered a nearby area that was just as compelling. Cape Porpoise is a wonderful spit of land with a deep cove, active fishermen coming and going, a great place to eat lobster, and beautiful views. It was, however, a bit hard to find parking in a distance where I could walk to my chosen painting sites. Finally I found a little spot where there was parking and the perfect spot to paint out of the way and in the shade! I did a few here. I was across the cove from a bunch of houses and this piece shows several of them, though not in the exact orientation. I liked it better this way!

Right next to the Scala Art Center, where I have my studio and teach classes, there is a historic building, formerly a school, that houses the Noack Organ Company. I've loved the building for a long time, and liked it even better after visiting the building for their new organ open house, which they hold each time an organ is completed. This organ was amazing. It was so big it could not fit in the open room of the two story building, so we viewed it in parts. I think it had over 4000 pipes. I painted this the day of the open house, before it started, and went over later.

Now I am moving up the coast and going to one of my (sort of) local painting spots. I just love this spot in York, Maine. The building pictured is the museum at the John Hancock Wharf, where he did his business. Nearby is the George Marshall Store. This is a historic building - the original store that sold the goods that came in to be unloaded onto the Hancock wharf, and other items. Now it is a wonderful contemporary art gallery, showing rising and established regional artists. Both of these sit on the banks of the York river, a lovely setting with a big wide dock. All this 40 minutes from my home!I have painted here several times.

I'm still in Rockport. The red building is Motif #1, so called because it has been painted so many times. They even have a festival for it.  I've done my share of paintings with the building in sight. After a long morning painting, I had put all my paints away and was sitting on a bench overlooking the harbor to eat my lunch and relax. There was no rest for me because I was drawn into the amazing interplay of all the rooflines in my view. I like the overall feeling of the piece, very fresh and free and colorful and I like the masts of the pirate ship behind the building.!

This is the largest piece in the exhibit and one of the very first large ones I have done in my career. The director of the art gallery encouraged me to paint larger and I have done that several times now. I absolutely love it. This piece was the star of the show - It was on the postcard announcing the exhibit.  This piece seems to carry all of the energy of the whole series within its edges. It is part of a series (Coastal Sunrise #1,2, etc.) that tell the story of a morning's sunrise at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. It is interesting how a show takes the power of all the pieces and creates a synergy that goes beyond. This exhibit certainly did, and I loved the feeling of being deeply involved in those skies in the months leading up to it. I want to share with you the artist statement for the exhibit, which took the form of a poem.

LYNNE SCHULTE

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“COASTAL SUNRISE” EXHIBITION

I want the viewer to be there with me, and to feel and see what I have experienced. In the Coastal Sunrise series, I celebrate the amazing skies of September mornings.

Look up
Up I can see forever
The sky is never as big as it is over the sea
I look down
Sand, rock, and the cool water around my ankles
bring me back to now.
The new day’s sky marked by the most brilliant color is far too much to contemplate in its hugeness
My smallness is comforting
My smallness is frightening
So I bend down, touch a shell, a stone, or a feather.
Then look up again

I pick up the brush and paint
and am transported far beyond myself to what is deepest and whole
I bring the sky inside.
