OK, those red pears looked so well behaved yesterday, but today one has become much more domineering. I love how these items take on new lives all their own, depending on how you place them. There's always a story somewhere. They are close, next to each other, but definitely at odds and the one in the back looks like a bully to me.

"Red Pears and Cherries"

Finally! It's the first piece I did back in my home studio after my Carol Marine workshop and after my week painting plein aire in Maine.  I have always loved the beautiful red pears and the glow and sparkle of cherries so I chose to do them first. The hardest part was the white oval soap dish the pear is sitting in. It's hard enough to get an elipse from a round object, and now an oval is something else entirely. But I am happy with this. I do not know how long I will do still life this way. Currently it is a good way for me to solidify the learning I had in the workshop. But I also find I am looking at landscape and florals differently so let's all just watch this new direction unfold!

"Hot and Sweet"

6x6 oil on panel

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $69

This is another piece I did in Carol Marine's class in Maine. Let's just say that this was a challenge. Any idea just how many yellows are in that yellow pepper? Especially if you had to wipe it all out and start over. I like the way the peppers seem to be having a conversation, trying to come to something in common.

"Aglow"

6x6 oil on panel

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $69

It's the first of the new work! This was the last painting I did in Carol Marine's Boothbay Harbor class in Maine. I think I like the joy and the energy it has best of all those I did. Stay posted and you will see some more!

Two Yellow Daisies (Matted)

7.5x5 oil on prepared paper, archivally matted

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $69

Oh, it's a classic. I have been using this image since 1997 for card sets; it is a favorite in the green ribbon set on etsy.  It is simplicity and joy; who couldn't love two yellow daisies? Still available as an original.

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 card sets (sets of 5 different blank cards) available on Etsy.

Yellow Day Lily (Matted)

7.5x5 oil on prepared paper, archivally matted

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $69

I remember painting this in a yard of an acquaintance. There were hundreds of the orange tiger lillies with the downward curving petals, but for some reason this is the one I chose, maybe because of it's rarity in the scene. Later, I regretted not painting the tiger lillies, and started looking for another opportunity. It took a long time to find it again, but I did eventually, in Maine, outside a motel where we stayed on a mini honeymoon. (I think every couple should have at least a couple of days of honeymoon each year!)

This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other small florals, is part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. Many of these images are available as blank cards, and I have 10 different card sets of five florals available on Etsy.

Red Lily (Matted)

7.5x5 oil on prepared paper, archivally matted

Available at Auction on Daily Paintworks
Starting bid $69

When I was painting my "Year in Bloom" paintings, I loved the lilies the best. They have such a scuptural structure, came in so many colors, and really gave a focus to a small painting. Here is one of a deep red asiatic lily.

An update for my readers:
I am restarting my Daily Paintworks blog. After a recent workshop with Carol Marine, I have returned all refreshed and inspired! I will be posting some pieces that I have posted before, but these will be now available at auction for a great price! Some will be new works inspired by the workshop, and oil sketches done on location as I work plein aire on pieces that will become larger works in the studio. The works primarily posted here will be my smaller work. Larger work will now be available through my brand-new gallery. (No website yet at larkrisinggallery.com, but watch for it and e-mail me if there is a painting you were looking for.) The new gallery is called Lark Rising, and like that bird, will lift your spirits! It is in Rockport, MA, on Bearskin Neck in the Bearskin Neck Motor Lodge lobby.

I had a lovely bunch of roses and was experimenting with how to make them freshly and quickly. This is one that I love: It just worked and doing anythig else would have not made it better.

Wildflower or weed? These were not planted but were beautifully placed in the yard at the St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont where I was taking a summer course. This piece is archivally matted to 12x14 for a nice presentation. This image, as are the other smal florals, are part of "A Year in Bloom" a series of 365 paintings I created one year. These great sunflowers were in a pot in front of the garage in our house when we lived in Thetford, VT. I liked the way they looked with the stone wall and the grass behind them. They were the short kind that look great in a pot. This piece is matted with a 3" archival mat to 12x14. It is part of the series "A Year in Bloom", 365 paintings of flowers done in one year.
