A Murder in the Garden Club part 1

A Murder in the Garden Club
12x16
Oil on Canvas
Sold

OK, this was fun. I did this painting to be used as the cover for a book by a friend, Neal Sanders (available through Amazon, and a good read too). It was fun to see it published. In painting it, I wanted to show a normal suburban setting, but get a somewhat sinister sense, like something is not quite right. I did that through the mood of the light, with an approaching storm and a watering can tipped over with  - what??? - dribbling out of it. Soon I will start on his next book's cover - "Murder for a Worthy Cause".

In My Garden No Tulips Blow

Mixed Media
Archivally Matted with a thin Dark Wood Frame

This piece is mysterious, with the use of stenciling, and drawing in ink, acrylic, and prismacolor pencil. Words are mingled with the image, speaking of the wildness of the authors garden. Delicate drawings and a print top the underlying images.

This piece was a surprise to me, because I was just playing, I thought. But sometimes creative play leads to nice pieces. I had some new metallic acrylic inks and wanted to try them. But I got lost in the image and really loved the outcome.

A combination of drawing, painting, printing and love for the color copper sets this piece apart from most of my other work and makes people stop in their tracks when they see it for the first time. It is done of the extremely strong Arches Textwove paper that can take anything.

Another piece from the inside work series has a purple/red/gold theme with touches of blue and black. Each division has a separate theme with a abstracted connection to nature. Glints of metallics and delicate linear touches add details. A good piece for this time of year, where the garden is keeping me out of the studio. The white mat and dark wooden frame set it off.

This is a beautifully colorful piece. Black Sumi ink, and colored acrylic inks underlie prismacolor pencil detail and enrichment. The title and embedded words come from words in a Bernie Siegal tape, "Meditations for Peace of Mind". I would sit and listen at the end of a difficult day and be transported far away, in a type of self-hypnosis. It was a beautiful experience that helped me through a difficult time.

I absolutely love this piece. It is one of a series that I occasionally do, and I will show these pieces for a few days. I call them "inside work". This piece combines nature drawing with tissue collage, acrylic inks, and colored pencil. Though the effect is abstract, it actually is quite realistic if you know what you are looking at.

I was painting with a friend at the Cox Reservation, which is the headquarters of Essex County Greenbelt, a nature conservation area , and a great supporter of artists. The view there is absolutely spectacular and I had painted it several times, including the view of Spring Marsh, posted on this site on May 9th, 2012. Well, I just didn't want to do it that day, but my friend did. So I turned around with my back to the view and found the most beautiful....poison ivy! I painted it with the rocks and just loved it.

Some winter days are so beautiful, especially when you have been cooped up in the house for a while. And, sometimes, when you get to walk down the long boardwalk to the beach at Plum Island in the Parker River Wildlife Preserve, you see combinations of sunlight trees, sand dunes and grasses that are just lovely. This was one of those days. This lovely place is near Newburyport, MA, another favorite spot, and I am 25 minutes from each of them. Very lucky!

This piece is one of the more exciting ones from the summer I spent 3 weeks at Skidmore College in a fellowship program for high school art teachers ,started by professor Regis Brodie, to renew their creative juices. (An awesome program, btw) I painted all over the campus, and it was here I did my first multi-small-paintings series, building to almost 70 of them over three weeks. Needless to say , I got freerer and freeer as the time moved along. This is one of the last ones; I think it is pretty special; it would probably take me at least a month of warm ups to get that loose again.
Note: click the link to find out more about the program - it is still running, but application is closed for this year. If you teach high school art, seriously consider it for next year.

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, is a special place, almost sacred to me. It is the place where I go to get deeper into everything I am thinking of, and to move ahead in my art. I haven't been recently, but have been there 8 times, each meaningful in a different way. It's a community of 70-80 artists living and working and playing together. It sits in a balsam boreal forest with rocky boulders and many lichens and mosses and magic spots. Most of all, it tumbles down the hill to the sea, with wide steps good for sitting, and if you step off the stairs you find places to work and places to dream, to wonder, and to relax. I am remembering when we all took our blankets one night in August and stayed into the night watching the meteor showers until I left at 3. Some stayed all night. And the art! It is the best fine crafts in the world, and each session they have one paper studio that offers things like printmaking, drawing, bookmaking, and papermaking. That's where I usually land. This small painting is done from the deck right outside my cabin. All this beauty under your nose!

When you finally get to the Cape, and work your way down Rte 6 toward the outer area, you finally get to the main visitor center for the Cape Cod National Seashore, and you have checked the exhibits, and used the restroom, you step out the back and this is what you see. I cannot go to Eastham without stopping here. It is a spectacular view.

I created this piece standing in a yard outside the Fresh Paint Gallery on Cape Cod with other artists; we were having a paint-in. At the time, I was a member of this gallery. The only thing that drew me was this tree, and it drew me strongly. The incredible action of the trunk and branches twisting around, compounded by the vines going every which way gave me plenty of challenge.

It always feels good to be painting on Cape Cod. I am hoping I can do some of that this summer. Here I am at Grays Beach, with my back to the parking lot, and I can see the lifeguard station just beyond the cedars and just a strip of the water. I like how the foreground was so warm, and I am crazy about the umbrella!

While we're talking about Gray's Beach, you might like to click on the link. It shows the amazing long, long boardwalk there. Here is another painting I did at Gray's beach, from the Pink Chair series. This time I was in FRONT of the lifeguard stand.

Spring Marsh

Oil on Panel
SOLD

This is one of my favorite pieces for this time of year and I wanted to share it with you, even though it was sold. The colors tell just what is happening right now in the coastal marshes.I painted it at the Cox Reservation in Essex, MA. This gorgeous place was the home of renowned muralist Allyn Cox, who gave the property to the conservation group, Essex Greenbelt.

From their website: "The studio barn, which served as Cox’s Studio, still contains many of the tools used by Allyn Cox to practice and create his murals. Some of the implements on display include old canvas stretchers, brushes, and palettes. One of his murals is permanently on display. For one weekend every June, Greenbelt hosts an art exhibit and sale. Two barns are converted into colorful galleries, and display and sell the artwork of over 130 local Essex County artists.

The view there that I painted is often referred to as "Motif #2". It is a place where artists are always welcome and can find lots to paint.

The same day I painted Plum Island #1 (posted yesterday) I painted this picture at the Parker River Wildlife Preserve at Plum Island. I just looked right instead of left, same spot. The fields had just been mowed, probably a control of some kind in this wildlife refuge, and there were wet spots in the foreground as well as the waterway behind. What at first seemed rather plain and simple, became one of my favorites.

This piece was done at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport right after "First Light" but the differences surprised me: the blue settled into the sky more lightly and a slight cloud was overhead. The sea also picked up a sense of lightness. These clear sky mornings are quite different than the ones with all the cloud drama, and quite peaceful. Looks like a beautiful day ahead!
